When it comes to shooting top-notch films, using Kauai’s world-class scenery is a no-brainer. Grab your popcorn, slather on some sunscreen and book a trip to Kauai to experience some of the most breathtaking backdrops in movie history.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
A huge reason for this series’ success is derived from its majestic filming locations. The Kalalau Valley is located on the northwest side of the island and boasts trails, waterfalls and swimming holes; the perfect backdrop for Captain Jack Sparrow. Another area that had Jack Sparrow and Angelica are traipsing through massive leaves the size of elephant ears, as well as scenery for the Spanish Camp was located at the National Tropical Botanical Garden. It is located on the northeastern outskirts of Kauai and offers one of the most enchanting waterfalls nature has to offer. The legendary Fountain of Youth seen in the series was built on set, but the grotto leading up to it is the Waikapala’e Wet Cave. This is one of two wet caves in the area, initially formed as a sea cave. Now, it’s fed by spring waters. With no civilization in sight, Kauai’s Honopu Beach was the perfect site for this pirate-themed flick to film.
Jurassic World
The Jurassic Kahili Ranch in Kauai is a highly sought-after location for film making. This prehistoric property covers 2,800 acres on the north shore of the island. Stunning waterfalls, ponds, streams and lush forests flow effortlessly into mountainous terrain. During filming, producers transformed simple trails into ecologically responsible access roads perfect for filming those memorable panoramic shots. Lawai, used for aerial shots and located on Kauai’s south shore, was also featured in the film. Manawaiopuna Falls is a privately owned waterfall in the film that’s accessible only via helicopter tour. This waterfall located in southwestern Kauai’s Hanapepe Valley is so iconic to the franchise that it is often referred to as “Jurassic Falls.” Here’s a little movie trivia for you. Can you guess the location of the scene when Grant and the kids have to negotiate before Ellie restores the lethal current? If you guessed Olokele Valley, you’re correct. Producers filmed this in Kauai, a few miles northwest of Waimea. Despite all these locations being stellar photo ops and a great way to gain bragging rights amongst your friends, many of the sites are accessible only by guided tours, so be sure to plan in advance.
Avatar
Surprisingly, not every frame of this 2009 blockbuster needed to utilize computer generation. The film features Kauai’s Keahua Arboretum located high above the Wailua River. This is a definite change in scenery from the sun and sand-soaked beaches often found on the island. The arboretum offers crisp mountain air, tree-lined roads and open, grassy fields. Other notable aspects about this location are the abundant flora and fauna as well as freshwater pools. When you’re in a place as breathtaking as Kauai, there’s no digital enhancement necessary.
