Updated 05/05/2014: Indiana Joe's is no longer operating. However, you can enjoy the same kinds of experiences with the Mayan Extreme Adventure and the Extreme Canopy Tour, both available through Lomas Travel.

It's time to channel your inner adventurous archeologist at Indiana Joe's Aktun-chen Nature Park! I'm pretty brave when it comes to travel, and let me just say that Aktun-chen brought out my daredevil side. Caves, pools and wild animals - oh my!

Adventures at Aktun-chenMake sure you arrive early so you can get done everything you want to do in one day. Definitely take a cave tour! "Aktun-chen" is Mayan for "the cave with cenotes inside" so this is not a tour you'll want to skip. My guide showed me all of the amazing underground pools and natural rock formations. I had to crouch down a lot since the stalagmites were so tall! Take time to say hello to Sam, an adorable little monkey outside of the cave. Don't be afraid to get friendly with him - he loves posing for pictures!

Bring a swimsuit and set aside some time to swim in the centote, which is an underground freshwater pool. They're absolutely breathtaking. You can snorkel here, too. Bring your own gear if you'd like, but I recommend renting gear at the park so you don't have to carry it around with you all day. And if you have one, make sure to bring your underwater camera. The water is crystal clear with very unique, beautiful lighting, which makes for amazing photos.

Then for the zip-lining. What can I say? It's one of my favorite things to do, and Aktun-chen is one of the best places I've done it. You can go upside-down or together with a partner! The staff told me that people can even go with no hands (not me - I'm not quite that courageous!). The zip-lines are done through a series of 10 lines. The staff is a ton of fun and made me laugh. Talk about an adrenaline rush!

From the giant snakes (yikes!) to the lush environment, Aktun-chen is chock full of adventure. It's one of those places I'll definitely be visiting again. There's just too much to do to fit it all in one trip!

Things to remember:

  • SPF. Who wants a sunburn? No one.
  • Bug spray. It could be humid, and no one wants mosquitoes to join the fun.
  • Wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and shoes. You'll be exploring lots of cool natural locations, so you might break a sweat. Good thing there's a refreshing cenote to jump into!
