If you only go on one excursion during your vacation, let me suggest deep-sea fishing! It’s so much fun and definitely not something that you can do just anywhere.

fishing 1I always recommend booking your deep-sea fishing trip in advance. There are two reasons why this is important. First, your bragging rights will be off the charts when you return with a giant sailfish. Second, days go by so quickly when you’re on vacation…you might get wrapped up in that book on the beach, and the next thing you know, you’re on the plane back home. Planning in advance makes sure that you have vacation memories somewhere other than just in your beach chair.

Deep-sea fishing at Maroma Beach in Mexico’s Riviera Maya guarantees you’ll have a great experience. It’s the perfect place to start as a beginner and get your sea legs. I’ve gone deep-sea fishing in many destinations over the years, and this is one of the best places to just “give it a try.”

This type of angling is called deep-sea fishing because it really does require very deep waters. Sometimes that means you have travel over an hour out to sea to get started. But at the Maroma Beach Marina, you can drop your line in the water after just a five- to ten-minute boat ride. The deep water just on the other side of the Mayan Barrier Reef is full of known as the #1 Sailfish Spot, and is also great for marlin, wahoo and dorado.

This is my fool-proof list for what to bring on your deep-sea fishing excursion:

  • fishing 2Biodegradable sunscreen – Maroma Beach mandates this to keep the area pristine
  • Camera – don’t forget to take photos of your catch!
  • Sunglasses and/or a hat to shade your eyes and face
  • Money – it’s always nice to tip your guides
  • Medication for seasickness, just in case
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • Comfortable shoes to wear on board
  •

Deep-sea fishing is a great activity for families with older kids who want to do something fun together. Fishing isn’t just for dads anymore! This is one adventure that you’ll never forget.
