Seasoned travelers have known for a while that a carry-on is more than sufficient for most vacations. In addition to savings you checked bag fees, it just makes everything more convenient. This is especially true over long holiday weekends like the 4th of July, Labor Day and Memorial Day, when there are more travelers to navigate around and more waiting in baggage claim.

Now, packing for me is not a quick process, but I find it’s worth it to spend that time instead of dealing with the hassle of checked bags. Just walk straight from the gate to your transportation, and get to the beach that much faster.

  • Make a list of what you’ll need instead of pulling all your clothes out of their drawers and trying to winnow down the pile to something manageable.
  • Start with a few basics that match everything—like a pair of white capris—then build out from there. A basic sundress can go from beach casual to dinner-ready just by changing out of the flip-flops and adding some nice jewelry.
  • Pick a color palate, so you don’t have to bring shoes to match each top.
  • You’re on vacation—no one will notice if you’re wearing the same shorts three days in a row. In fact, the only reason I pack a second pairs of shorts is in case I happen to spill sangria or salsa on the first one.
  • Remember you’ve got an extra outfit—what you wear on the plane. The same light sweater or wrap that keeps you warm after the sun goes down can keep you warm on an over air-conditioned plane.
  • Be honest; are you really going to exercise on vacation? If not, then leave the gym shoes at home. If you skip the strappy sandals at home because they’re uncomfortable, what makes you think you’ll wear them on vacation?
  • The video above gives some great tips on using the space in your carry-on wisely—without wrinkles, to boot!
