What does vacation mean to you? A break from the whirl-wind routine? A chance to catch up with your family? Maybe it’s just a week away to discover somewhere new. Along with a glistening tan, the best vacations give the gift of perspective—of just how lucky we are. And the best resorts give you the chance to make a difference. Check out how these resorts are giving back to their communities (and how you can even lend a helping hand).
Palace Resorts
The Palace Foundation focuses on improving the health, educational opportunities and environmental care in their communities. In eight villas, the Palace Foundation Foster Home houses and cares for 96 foster children providing a place to sleep, study, and play. The Foundation also provides financial academic and transportation support to low-income higher-education students and, to date, has supplied 72 scholarships and helped 65 students graduate. Want to volunteer? Just email voluntariofundacion@palaceresorts.com before your trip and ask how you can help.
Hard Rock Hotels
Sometimes, there’s no better pick-me-up than your favorite song—and no one understands the healing power of music better than Hard Rock Hotels. The Hard Rock Heals Foundation™ supports charitable programs and efforts in cities around the world. In conjunction with the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, The Hard Rock Heals Foundation™ replaced all the instruments Scarborough Elementary School lost to Hurricane Harvey. And officially brought the music program back.
MGM Resorts
At MGM Resorts, everyone chips in to make a difference. Through the employee-driven MGM Resorts Foundation, employee donations are shared with non-profits of their choosing. Their efforts have raised and distributed nearly $65.6 million and supported more than 3,000 charitable organizations in U.S. communities. The annual Women's Leadership Conference—the foundation's signature program—inspires the professional and personal advancement of women in the U.S., especially in Nevada. Proceeds from the conference go to non-profits like Safe Nest, Women's Chamber of Commerce of Nevada, Women's Development Center, and more.
Couples Resorts
Couples Resorts established the Issa Trust Foundation in 2005 to deliver the highest level of pediatric medical care to Jamaican families with the help of both local and U.S.-based healthcare providers and professionals—for free. The foundation also supports the education of Jamaican children by assisting with reading and writing skills. Air Supply—the foundation’s official musical ambassador for benefit concerts—helped raise $160,000 to renovate the pediatric ward in St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital. And that’s music to our ears.
Barceló Hotel Group
Established in 1989, the Barceló Foundation improves childhood education in African and Latin American countries by constructing schools, training local educators, and providing school supplies. To help low-income families start their own businesses, the foundation provides interest-free loans. You can volunteer for one of their projects by reaching out to the foundation directly at fundacion@barcelo.com.
