Don’t let the fear of a language barrier keep you from your dream destination. When you’re going to popular tourist areas, there’s really no need to worry. Even though the official language of the Dominican Republic and much of the rest of the Caribbean is Spanish, the staff at resorts and attractions often speak English. That said, knowing how to say “hello” and “thank you,” in Spanish will go a long way with the locals.

Need a couple more helpful phrases to know? “Por favor,” pronounced just how it looks, means “please” and “No hablo español” (pronounced “no AHV-low ess-pawn-YOHL”) lets someone know you don’t speak Spanish.

Don't worry about sounding silly. Just say it with a smile, and you’ll be fine! Hasta luego!
