The Explorean Cozumel is a new all-inclusive resort concept in Cozumel, Mexico. But what makes it so different from other resorts on the island or nearby Riviera Maya?
The most obvious difference between The Explorean and more traditional all-inclusive resorts is that it is tucked directly behind its sister resort, Fiesta Americana Cozumel. This means that there are no oceanview rooms at The Explorean. But beachgoers take heart; guests have full access to the beach at Fiesta Americana Cozumel.
“The Explorean is totally surrounded by foliage in the jungle,” says Funjet Insider Matthew Anderson, Funjet Vacations' resident expert on Cozumel. “But with that said, it’s only 24 steps to the Fiesta Americana – I counted – so guests can still access the beach, pools and additional restaurants.”
It’s not just the unique setting that sets The Explorean apart. The resort has one restaurant (but remember that guests can access more restaurants at the Fiesta Americana next door). But this is no ordinary restaurant.
“There is no set menu,” Anderson explains. “The chef comes to your table to find out what you would like to eat, and then he creates an amazing dish for you. They are really great about asking if you have any allergies or foods you don’t like so that your dinner is totally customized to you. The food is incredible.”
If you’re feeling indecisive, there is a suggested menu of chef’s specials for the day to guide your decision. However, if you are in the mood for something like seafood or Italian, just tell the chef and he will make your food just for you.
Once your belly is full of delicious food, you can take advantage of yet another unique aspect of the resort: the excursions. Your stay at The Explorean includes an excursion every day. Choose from activities like catamaran trips, snorkeling and biking around the island, horseback riding or exploring Maya ruins, all led by the resort’s experienced staff.
“I chose to do the evening kayak to Passion Island,” Anderson says. The experience includes a sundown kayak trip to a small offshore island, where guides teach about the history of the island. Once the sun goes down, the group kayaks back to shore, where a torch- and candle-lit gourmet dinner has been prepared in the jungle.
“One of my favorite things about the resort was the sense of community,” Anderson says. “Everyone at the resort becomes friends while doing these fun activities together. You get to know the other travelers and it adds this extra layer to the whole experience.”
More evidence that The Explorean is focused on providing a place for guests to spend quality time together is the lack of TVs and minibars in the rooms. It’s an intimate atmosphere that’s secluded, not sleepy.
“There are people from all walks of life at The Explorean,” Anderson comments. “It’s a great choice for people who like to get out and explore, and make memories together as a family or group of friends.”
