Tips & Transportation

  • Airport

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is the airport you will fly into for your Puerto Plata getaway. The airport is east of Puerto Plata and west of Sousa. Each visitor entering the Dominican Republic must obtain a $10 Tour Card. As of 2018, the Tourist Card is included in all air tickets issued outside the Dominican Republic.
  • Immigration & Customs

The Dominican Republic requires a $20 USD departure tax that's usually included in your airfare. Typically, during your flight, the flight attendant will give you your customs paperwork to fill out on the plane. After you've made it through the immigration desk and grabbed your luggage from baggage claim, you'll go to claims, where officers may check your bags.
  • Getting to Your Resort

Amstar provides transportation to and from the airport and your resort, with various transfer options. You can share a ride with guests from nearby resorts or take a private transfer directly to your resort. After clearing Customs, you will go to the transportation waiting area. Look for the blue-flowered shirts and friendly faces; they will take care of everything from there. These professionals will provide you with safe and comfortable transportation. They'll also provide transportation to any excursions booked through our site.
  • Getting Around Puerto Plata

Getting around Puerto Plata is pretty straightforward, and there are several ways to explore the area:

    • Taxis: Taxis are easily accessible in Puerto Plata and are a convenient way to get around. Agree on a fare or ensure the meter is in use before starting your ride.
    • Organized Tours/Excursions: Consider booking organized tours for day trips or activities farther afield. Transportation is often a part of your trip package. Enhance your vacation with an excursion through Amstar, the official destination management company for Funjet Vacations.
    • Motoconchos: These are small motorcycles with drives that offer rides for a negotiable fair. In the Dominican Republic, these are a standard mode of transportation, especially for short distances.
    • Public Transportation: While less widely used, public buses and shared vans (guaguas) are available as budget-friendly options.
