    Book Tulum Grand Bahia instead

We went as a group of 8 people and had been to the Coba before. Returning there was a bit of a disappointment. We were suddenly not able to use the snack bar by the beach (or any of the chairs near the snack bar) unless we paid an additional $200 US to upgrade, so had to return to the Coba which often took up to 1/2 hour plus by trolley. There were NEVER enough chairs at the beach. The ocean was full of rocks (which was not our previous experience so they must have had a bad storm) - it was almost unswimmable except for a tiny spot. The entertainment was fantastic, except 1/2 the time you had to pay to attend. The sanitary conditions at the buffet were disappointing - maybe 1000 people all using the same utensil to dish up various dishes, plus I watched people use their hands to dig through food for their desired items. There was no supervision or hand wash stations or sanitizer. Out of 8 of us, 3 got very ill with diarrhea and vomiting, and 2 got bad bellies for a day. The resort otherwise was clean, drinks were good, and service was good. My suggestion would be to pay the additional cost and book at the Tulum Grand Bahia Principe as it part of the same resort but a valuable upgrade.

    Don’t go there!

Way too many issues to list. Here’s a few….. the room was VERY dated, the food was plentiful but tasteless and always cold, there was quite a language barrier there- staff did not speak English, transportation to AND from the airport (booked through Bahía) was a nightmare. The straw that broke…..we had a wake up call for 3am, and were told that they would come to our villa at 3:15 for us and our luggage. Good thing we set an alarm too, as the call was late. THEN, they never came!!! At 3:15 we ran back up and called- no answer. So we had to run dragging our bags (probably close to half a mile) to catch the van before it left. My fresh knee replacement didn’t appreciate that. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! We filled out their survey, listing our issues in detail, and asked for a partial refund. All they said was they were sorry that we had a poor experience.

I wish I had known better…why are the reviews so good?

For the price, which was not cheap, I would never book this resort again. There is no way this resort should have 4 out of 5 rating. So many disappointing details I wish I had known beforehand. First is that you can only eat at a la carte restaurants for half the nights of your stay unless you are at one of their more expensive sister resorts or a preferred member. There is only one buffet, which means you are eating at the same restaurant, breakfast, lunch, and dinner for much of your stay. Second is that at the beach you are treated as a second class citizen (unless apparently you pay per person per day to have access to other resorts facilities). This meant there is no where near the beach that you can eat and the beach is a good 15 minute walk from the buffet of Coba. Half the a la carte restaurants were only available to be booked by preferred members or those from the fancier resorts, even though they are at the resort we’re staying at. We have ALWAYS had room service at other similarly priced resorts. We were disappointed to find this was not an option, but one evening my children were feeling ill. I called concierge services to see if there was any option and I was told I would have to leave my sick children, go to the lobby to get a ticket, and carry the food from the buffet to my room. Never mind that then I would not be able to eat or that the rest of my family would then have to wait in the room while I went for food so my children weren’t left alone. The beach area was fairly small and packed with people, the water was not too clear due to the waves on this beach, and the water was so rocky you really couldn’t wade comfortably out into the water. There were some pros: The resort was nice looking. Employees were nice. Rooms were clean for the lost part.. The rooms and facilities were ok, not great or updated, but they were fine. The food at the a la carte restaurants was good. Kids water park was ok but a bit run down. Pools were nice.

    Good value for sleeping only.

It's ok to use this location as your sleeping quarter. Then, get their pass that allows you to visit all 4 resorts for just $15 pp/day and spend your time at the Akumal and Tulum side (you can also go to Sian Kaan, but why? There's nothing there- it felt like a nursing home - no offense). We spent most of our days (and nights) at the Akumal area due to its proximity to the beach. Akumal are more generous when it comes to their towels too- not as strict as the Coba. Akumal is only a 10 minute walk from Coba (we were in Building 28. If beach is a priority, try getting the buildings with lower number if you can - bldg 1 and 2 were the ones I really want but they all looked empty. I think they try to corral everybody in one area. If money isn't a factor, I will definitely book the Akumal side.
