Not great / Not bad
This hotel is on a very beautiful stretch of beach with corals that you can swim around, stunning views and clear flat water. The staff are wonderful, drinks are good and the pool is big with plenty of sun chairs so no one needs to reserve a chair first thing in the morning. There is a quiet pool in another section for those who don't like the noise of the activities. People seem to enjoy the activities (yoga, sand games, dance lessons and bingo). Theres a nice pool bar on the beach away from the noise if people like that. HOWEVER.... The rooms are dark and dated. Very skimpy on towels. No Kleenex in the dispenser. No extras like skin creams. Looks a little mouldy and the first room we were in smelled of mold and mildew. The food at the buffet is less than average. The meat and fish look so overcooked that it looks leathery. Lots of choices but for a person allergic to shellfish, it seems to be interspersed amongst everything. The food at the a la carte restaurants was better. So, this resort doesn't live up to its 4.5 star rating. 5 star for service. 3 star for food, rooms and amenities.

Nice resort
Lovely grounds and our room was kept neat and clean by Marie Ana . Rooms are a little dated but very clean and spacious. Mini bar filled daily. Shout out to Victor at the front desk was efficient and had us set up for our spa carte dinners in minutes. The Italian and French ala carte restaurants were amazing. The food was great, and the service was outstanding. We went to the Brazilian restaurant as well one night. The service was awful. I had told three men standing by the front on our way out that we were very disappointed with the service. One of them gave us a thumbs up and the other ones kind of looked the other way . The buffet had a great selection of food sometimes cold, but that’s buffets and the service was hit or miss but they were very very busy over the Christmas holidays . We spent most of our afternoons at the quiet pool. You could always get a seat there and it wasn’t very busy. The beach and the main pool were so busy we never even spent any time there. The beach was amazing for walking cause once you got off the property, it was nice and open and not many people and you could walk for many kilometers Either way. We did some great hikes in behind the resort as well and did a morning hike with Gogreen rd tours so nice to get into the countryside and the forest. Also, the security guards were very friendly as we were coming and going from the property quite a bit. Entertainment was good . There are many cats at the resorts and most are quite healthy. We did feed the ones by Villa number seven and the ones by the quiet pool. Some of the cold cuts from the buffet. There is one cat that hangs out by villa number seven that has a terrible eye infection and I just hope that someone Meaning management at the resort are taking care of those cats because it’s so sad to see it breaks my heart. please please please take care of those cats.

Great location but poor rooms
The check in was very fast and everyone took great care of us even though we arrived late at night (they kept the buffet opened a bit longer so we could eat a bit after a long day of traveling). The beach is perfect, a lot of fish to go see in the water, a lot of trees on the beach. The main pool area was also beautiful, however it was very difficult to shower in between the beach and the pool since the showers did not work very well (we could only wash our feets/legs). The kids loved the water park and the tennis court (however, the tennis court needs to be replaced since it is not in a very good shape anymore). The food in the restauriant La Terrienne was amazing! One of the best meal I had in all inclusives. The rest of the restaurants/buffet were okay, I ate mostly the same thing throughout the week (I have to admit I am scared of fresh vegetables since they could be washed with contaminated water, so I avoided the salad bar even though it looked good!) CONS OF OUR STAY: ROOMS! We were in building 27 (the furthest one from the lobby and next to the road and hotel machinery). We tried to go on the balcony the first day when the kids were taking a nap.. but we could not enjoy it since the noise from the cars on the road added to the noise from the machinery was way too loud!! Thus we never used the balcony during our stay. At night, we could hear cars go by that would wake us up (it looks like the locals like to listen to music super loud in their car and it felt like they were in the room with us for a couple seconds every time they would pass by the hotel). In my opinion, Bahia Principe tried to add another building to make more money, but this building should have never been built this close to the road and the machinery. It is very disappointing from well renowned hotels like Bahia Principe. The cleanliness of the bathroom was also very disappointing (not the cleaning lady's fault). It looked like there was a water leaked from the floor above but the ceiling was never replaced (it was all wavy and dirty). The bath was not welcoming at all to wash our kids in it (we only used the shower) since there was rust/dirty spots in it. The shower was also pretty discusting ( I don't know if it's the water, but all the faucets were full of dirty white spots). To resume, the resort is beautiful and in a great spot for the beach and fish. But the rooms were not to the standards of bahia principe hotels.

Beautiful Beach, Poor Food, Got FOOD POSIONING
Never again. Too crowded, and the food was okay, mainly the same, day after day with a few minor changes. Food that was prepared for you, that was mainly safe to eat. Food that should have been chilled, like salad dressing wasn’t, and it was hot in the 30’s. Only good food we had was la carte at the fish market. We paid for an upgrade to unit 3, which was close to everything. Had no problem with our room, clean, everything worked. Real reason for not going back is because I got FOOD POISONING. I was deathly sick and went to the local hospital, no one really spoke English, so I trusted the doctor. I have no problem with the medical service, but we had to pay up front over $3,000 CDN for that bill. I was also upset that the resort did not shuttle us to the hospital, but had paid $40 USD for a taxi ride to the hospital, but the driver was good. I am asking for some compensation as I paid for all inclusive, but lost 4 days of eating and not being able to enjoy the ocean. I know another couple are also asking for some compensation. I had to stay close to toilets. Still, I was not feeling well up to 5 days after I got home. I know of 3 other people who were sick with vomiting with extreme diarrhea. There must have been more guest, as the resort doctor was seeing other patience's. Great beach, can walk a long distance, but must give name and room number if leaving the resorts beach. Large pool was crowded, hard to get a lounge, and the smaller pool was less crowded. If interested see the country, not many tours, and not that great as I was told from guest who took them.

Enjoyable stay at El Portillo
We enjoyed Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo in mid-December. We have overall very positive impression. Very beautiful and well maintained property: clean, green, compact and convenient. Rooms are a bit dated but everything worked well: AC is efficient and quiet, safe, TV, mini fridge restocked daily. Buffet restaurant is the best, never disappointed. Variety and quality of food is amazing. We tried only one ala cart - Le Terrine. Presentation was beautiful, tenderloin was good, but more the medium than medium-rare. Red snapper was raw. Contrary, next day in the buffet the red snapper was outstanding. There was also grouper every day in buffet. We also tried lobster dinner on the beach (UD$110 per couple minus 20% discount) which was complete disappointment. Lobster was burned and black smoked. People at the next table had it raw. Lesson learned, stay with the buffet and you will be happy. Bars are everywhere, bartenders work fast, and there is good selection of drinks. Some special brands are at the extra price. Beech is nice, and kept very clean. There are lots of palapas and chairs, but people tend to reserve them early. Despite of this, you can always find a chair and a shady spot under the trees. There are some corals in the water near the hotel. But the beech is very long, and you can find yourself a good spot to swim. Housekeeping and Front desk work well and promptly respond to any request. My special thanks goes to Air Canada rep Lucien Belton. On the way to the airport we found that we’ve lost a cellphone. Lucien made some calls, the phone was found and delivered to us prior to departure. Thanks!
