Don’t read too much into the bad reviews
Prior to travelling I had read a lot of reviews about the Bahía Akumal and was very apprehensive about staying there. Unless you have suffered a terrible and unfortunate experience at this hotel we found this hotel more than what we could have hoped for. The room was exceptionally clean on arrival and everyday, room 5512. Yes, a little out dated but perfectly fit for purpose. Large bed, TV, bathroom with sauna bath, lovely shower, fridge with welcome drinks and topped up daily. Spacious seating area and outside balcony. A lovely surprise was a birthday banner and bubbly on arrival in the room. We are in the Yum buffet area, breakfast was exceptional with every food you could wish for. I totally agree that the labelling of food is poor and quite dangerous as I had some rice which had prawn in and I don’t like fish which spoilt the dinner, but could have been worse for people with allergies etc. All the staff are amazing, polite, happy and welcoming! The animals that you see around this resort is nice to see, we haven’t seen these creatures up close and it was nice to be able to watch them in a safe environment. We could go on endlessly - you won’t be disappointed. Shout out to Antonio in the sports bar! Asset to Akumal. Tips: don’t use the coach, arrange a private transfer via the agent as we waited for 3hrs after our luggage waiting for Manchester and Birmingham arrivals. Take the Stanley cool cups or simulate as the cups are small. The staff do t mind filling them up. Plug socket - remember American connection. Only 2 sockets so take 1 plug and an extension cable. Dollars rather than pesos.

A GREAT PLACE TO ENJOY AND RELAX
My wife and I booked this resort for 10 days from January 30 until February 9, 2025. It is nicely located in a partially rocky, partially sandy beach area. The resort is close to three sister resorts and is in our mind the nicest of the three. The resort has three larger pools close to the beach but we only went to the beautiful beaches where it was not difficult at this time of year to find a nice place with sufficient shade. There was no seaweed at the time of our travel but this is supposedly different during the summer months. Because of rocks on the ground we recommend in many parts of the beach area to wear water shoes – also to be able to do some snorkeling and observe the many different fish that are in the shallow water. Water sports, such as kayaking, where not possible during our visit because there were too many waves. The gym facilities in the resort were well kept and in a good state, although relatively small for a relatively big resort. This was not a problem for us as only few other visitors used these facilities. We went every day for 1-2 hours and never had to wait to use equipment. We would expect this to be different in the summer months, however, with more visitors using these facilities. The food in the resort was very good. There are plenty of restaurants, yet we were initially disappointed to find out how difficult it was to book a table in the restaurants at a decent time. Places were available at 5:30 pm or after 10:00 pm. Talking to the concierge helped to get a couple of reservations at around 7 pm. Once we visited a couple of restaurants and the main buffet, we found that our original concerns were unfounded because the food quality at the buffet was excellent – easily as good as in the restaurants. Once we realized this, we canceled other restaurant bookings and stayed in the main buffet. The buffet was probably the best we ever had in a holiday resort. It offered a very large variety of food with a different theme every day, but went much beyond this theme and was decorated and presented in an appealing way. Employees in the buffet facilities were very nice and recognised us after a couple of days. We would like to point out Eric, Jose and Lourdes who did a terrific job but it is almost unfair not to name all the others who were just as friendly. We were not interested in any day excursions and cannot comment on their quality and costs. Instead, we took taxis a couple of days and went out on our own to beautiful cenotes (Dos Ojos and Yal Ku) of which there are many close-by. By doing this, we escaped the tourist crowds and were able to do things on our own pace – which was super enjoyable. All locals we encountered during our vacation were friendly and helpful, especially when we outed ourselves as Canadians. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ (Tripadvisor forced us to remove one sentence from this review). Overall, we spent an incredible 10 days and could certainly imagine to go back at some point in the future. In sum, I would give the resort 5 stars out of 5.

Insufficient restaurant spots
Beautiful resort...but they haven't kept up with restaurants. Booking an a la carte dinner didn't work on the website or the app...and the guest experience agents were not able to find availability either... So it was very frustrating spending so much time trying to make a dinner reservation each day...

Avoid BP Akumal, there are better choices.
We take a sun vacation annually with friends and we recommended Bahia Principe Akumal this year. We vacationed there in 2015 and had a good experience. This year was embarrassing. The facilities are very nice, but the customer experience not so good. We purchased swim up and requested at point of reservation (6 months prior) and at check-in (10 days prior) that they be adjacent. That didn’t happen and we were in different buildings. They moved us by day 3. The restaurant reservation system is terrible. You can book at time of check-in (10 days prior), but there wasn’t much available. We had several duplicates. We checked daily with guest services, but every restaurant was fully booked, yet there were a lot of empty tables every night. There is no flexibility in this system. We had one reservation at another BP resort that required a BP shuttle. The shuttle broke down, so we were late. We arrived first and were told that if our friends were not there within 15 minutes that they would not be served. I don’t expect perfection, but I expect a more or less hassle free vacation. When things go wrong, just be nice and get the problem resolved.
