A hotel in superb location for the right guest

We live Full Time in the DR and full disclosure, I own boutique agency working with customers looking to vacation in DR. I often times am invited by hotels with so I can experience first hand but we also travel for fun and I do not always want to have to be "working" while traveling . We ended staying her for one night on our to another resort only accesible by boat. What I loved about this hotel was the service. The staff were on PAR and you can tell from the guests interactions the reason why people return I think the property is unique in they offer AI and HB. We opted for HB meaning we had dinner and breakfast and drinks were not all inclusive. For us, it worked perfectly as I am discriminate drinker and I would 100% not drink the alocohol hidden under the bar that was part of AI plan. I was mistakenly served a Vodka Soda that brought make memories of Everclear in Freshman dorm, Due to low occupancy, the hotel had one option for dinner which our night was the "Gourmet" Again at this price point, the travel professional in me was curious in what their intepretation of Gourmet was. I was not shocked by food quality.. it was as expected. Not great. My husband Tuna Tartar was either cooked or old ( so not edible) , my camembert crunchy was basically deep fried skin of Camembert and no cheese. The $18 Upcharge for Salmon was a shocker. We live in Santo Domingo. and pay $18 for Salmom in the finest restaurants but I will say the cooked it very WELL DONE which is dream for any Dominican My steak was better than expected Breakfast was fine- usual. Although the bacon very bad quality ( See my review on Bacon at their 5 star property - the Cayo Levantado Resort) This is classic mid range hotel- at $ 250 a night AI in low season, the rooms are clean, large. great service, fun enviroment, but it is not 5 star or even 4 Plus based on food and alcohol choices

    Horrible

I have been to dominican republic 50 times since 2006. I love the people and the cultural. This is not a five star. Maybe 3. Food is horrible. No food on the horrible beach. Dark sand. No bar no bathroom. No one goes to beach. Hardly anyone here. Restaurants are closed and it is the weekend I went last night. Horrible. Cannot go again until Monday. But If Restaurant is open then buffet is closed. Really. At the pool today we got lots of rain. Went to the lobby. Bar was closed so I could not get a drink. Do not come here unless you want to spend time in the room. Rooms are nice. That's all. Never again

Views are beautiful. Food is horrible!!

I will star with my junior suite with an ocean view, my view was amazing. The bed and the pillows are extremely comfortable and room temperature is perfect!! The bad part is the food, it was horrible!!! I had an all inclusive, but you had to eat at designated times no room service till 11pm. This is the first all inclusive that I have been to that has this structure. For some dishes you have to pay for. The only thing that was decent was breakfast because the cook will make your eggs anyway you want. The rest is absolutely terrible. I had bbq ribs one night and the meat was rancid. None of the juices are natural. Though the grounds are beautiful, there is no nightlife at all!! If you want views only go, if not sorry stay away. I will say the staff is very friendly, it is not their fault the food is so bad.

    Very nice place! Very Elegant!

But...STAIRS! Reminded me of a M. C. Escher drawing of the Wincester House in Californa. There are two elevators that get you to the buffet, but getting from the lobby to the pool involves several winding stairs. Food is very good. Some people said it was always the same, but I saw a wide variety of dishes. No line up for omelettes. Had one night at the "a la Carte" Food was fine dining but small portions. Book as soon as you get there. Buffet was good enough for me. Coffee is strong and a bit bitter. Get it "con leche" -with milk. Tea is very weak. Bring your own from home. They have those very artsy two cup teapots. As others have said, this place closes up at midnight. Mostly older folks. There's easy listening and soft rock at the pool and buffet. Weekends there's a live band at the lobby bar. One night, the lead singer of a local group did an excellent job of Italian romantics from the 50's and 60's. Another night a 30ish lady soloist with a young lad on keyboards had the middle-aged women screaming while they danced the "Macarana". Most of the guests were from Spanish speaking countries. Me, I usually spent the afternoons at the pool soaking up good cocktails, You have to look for the asterix beside the name of the item to see if it's included in the Ai. Most are. Ask - Bailey's is extra $ but Carolan's is free. I tried the "Whiskey Cream" and didn't like it - tasted like Scotch. There's not a lot to do. There's a boat trip to the national park (Taino caves) and the beach on the cayo in front of the resort. A little expensive, but a nice afternoon on the water. Also, there's a snorkel boat for more $. The three hour taxi tour of the village of Samana isn't worth it. Remember, you have to pay extra to get the Ai, but it's worth it. Good value for $. It sure ain't Cuba. Everywhere off the resort, all the guys are hustlers (capitalists) and they will try and shill you. The private beach is very nice. I was told that the snorkelling off the beach is quite good. My room was very nice. They use a "chipped" wrist band instead of a card. Unfortunately, it can quit from long duration in the pool. TV is about 100 channels but only six are in English - CNN, Fox News, BBC, Lifeline (Soaps) FX and USA. The audio on the BBC is out of sync and occasionally non-existent on USA. Staff service is excellent. They always make sure you have a good time. As soon as the receptionist saw that I walk with a cane, she instantly changed my room from the 4th floor (stairs) to the 2nd with a sea view over the pool. Gotta like that! Good place for couples. Overall there was nothing negative...except for the tea.

The WORST food and hotel stay of my life

I paid to leave 2 days early, as the food was unbearable, worse than a 3 star cuban resort, in fact, the worst food that I have ever had the displeasure of eating in my entire life. Beautiful « looking » resort and pool area. The beach is nice-ish. The rooms are decent, once you remove the plastic flowers out of site and the odd « feather boa carpet (looks like something you’d see in a seedy motel), however the pillows and bathtubs need dire replacing and re-caulking. The sheets and pillows smelt badly, as though they had not been changed. The restaurant area has no air conditioning and so it is very hot, and the buffet area has no ventilation and so, the place stinks of the greasy foods being «fried » there, as does everyone afterwards that eats in the place. Half of the staff look absolutely miserable, with one female bartender in particular, by the pool, that looked at the tourists with pure contempt. This resort will not survive, it is sad, however, of it’s own doing. Bahia Principe needs to send North American quality control personnel to that hotel to turn it around. Start with cooking less food, but, higher quality meals, and lose the fried foods from the menu. In addition, train the staff to provide customer service with a smile, to make the tourists feel welcome, enjoy their stay and want to return.
