Disappointing Stay – Not Worth the Money
We stayed at Barcelo Maya Colonial for three nights, traveling with another family (four adults, three children total). Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing, and we were glad to leave. The biggest issue was the food and drinks. The majority of the options at the buffet were very poor quality, aside from a few items being cooked to order, and there were no available reservations at the restaurants, leaving us stuck with the buffet every night. Snack options were also disappointing. The drinks were some of the worst we’ve ever had, anywhere—everything tasted artificial, and I struggled to find anything remotely drinkable. After looking forward to cocktails on the beach, I barely drank at all during our stay here because they were so bad. The accommodations were also lacking. The beds were small and uncomfortable—so much so that one member of our group resorted to sleeping on couch cushions on the floor. While the pools and beach were beautiful, they were crowded, and getting a lounger required someone from our group to be out there at 6 AM to reserve a spot. One of the most frustrating aspects was the lack of clear information. It seemed almost intentional that there was little guidance on where to access services or how things worked at the resort, leaving us constantly searching for answers. On the positive side, the staff were pleasant and helpful, but unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to make up for the overall poor experience. This was meant to be a highlight of our trip, but instead, we were relieved to leave. The value for money was incredibly poor, and we would not return.

Will never return
We are here now and will never return. The whole reason we go on vacation is to lounge around the pools or beach, but they have so few loungers both at the beach and poolside that if you have not put a towel on one to reserve it by 6am, you don't have a hope in hell of getting two together. On day one, before 9am, I walked the entire Colonial and Tropical beach and pool areas and there were only three single scattered chairs, one of which was broken. This is beyond ridiculous. On day two, we sat on the grass and watched many of the chairs never be used. People only came back to them to gather their belongings at the end of the day. The ignorance of people here is beyond comprehension, and the resort does absolutely nothing to stop it. I hate being one of those people I am complaining about, but if we don't, we don't get a chair., so now we set our alarm to get up at 5:30 just so we can reserve chairs then go back to bed, and by 5:45, over half the chairs are reserved already. Doing this is ruining our vacation. It isn't for lack of space either. They could fit twice as many loungers. They have just cheaped out because they don't care if guests have chairs or not.

We really enjoy this place
We recently went back to the Barcelo Maya Colonial, for at least our 10th time. Love the facility and staff. We have gone with friends, family and couples. We enjoy the "Old World" atmosphere of the Colonial and will not return if there is a complete remodel like the Beach or Caribe. Food is generally very good to excellent especially the specialty restaurants. Kyoto Restaurant at the hibachi is a must. Great food and entertainment. Marenostrum Restaurant has great sea food but surprisingly the lamb chops are excellent. SantaFe has a great appetizer bar and while the steaks are not the size you can get in the US, they are flavorful. I would probably skip the Mexico Lindo next time unless they redo the menu. Tokyo was good but we prefer Kyoto. Breakfast is my favorite, freshly made fried eggs, refried beans, potatoes, sausage and bacon are my go-to and never disappoint. Fresh coffee is flavorful, a must for me. You can get your latte and Capuchino freshly made or from a to-go machine. Buffets have a variety of food, and I can always find something that I like. An almost endless variety of food and I enjoy trying new things. Drinks are excellent and available at many locations. We always stay in the Premium Level Oceanfront Junior Suites and prefer the 3rd floor. Great views and location. Rooms are perfect for 2 or more if needed. The mattress and pillows were very comfortable. The rooms could use a refresh, air condition controls, ceiling fan controls, patio glass door, screen and lock, sliding glass door in rest room, room amenities and paint. Clearly there is a need for more beach chairs and to replace the broke ones. It is unfortunate when people take your personal items off your chairs and take the chairs for themselves. This is rare but we have been in and/or seen close confrontations over beach chairs. Take a catamaran ride, you will enjoy it. Grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Unfortunately, an occasional guest will throw their trash on the ground even though there are trash containers readily accessible. Work-out facility is modern and more than adequate for a light to medium workout and my friend uses the lap pool every day. There was only one elevator working in our complex and we had a minor glitch with that one. However, it ended up being one of the funniest stories of the trip. We suggest you bring a couple of extra dollars to tip the staff. They work every hard to provide services, a clean room, dinner table, entertainment and always provide that little extra effort with a smile. Attended the Catholic Mass in the outdoor chapel and the priest made it a great experience. We will be back.
