Decent food. Entertainment lacking. Could improve cleanliness.
Decent food. Entertainment lacking. Could improve cleanliness. There are constantly trying to upsell for little things.. And we witnessed two fights over chairs, which was awesome for the kids.

STOP ANIMAL ABUSE
First I want to say that the workers at Barcelo Maya were really nice and did their best to provide great service. However, I did not educate myself on the presence of dolphins and the conditions the Dolphins are in at this location. I wish I had not given my money to a place that mistreats animals. Their dolphin facilities are very small and have had multiple incidents. STOP PAYING FOR ANIMAL ABUSE!! As for the hotel facilities, the rooms are alright but clean. People reserve beach chairs since the early morning and you cannot find anything after 8am. The breakfast buffet was good but the rest of the meals/included restaurants were mediocre at best. My parents got upset stomach multiple times. Tennis courts are constantly booked. Honestly, the two good things about the location was the beach and the workers.

Our go-to resort in Riviera Maya
This is the 7th time at Barcelo Maya, we've enjoyed staying here and keep coming back. My relative recently stayed at Allegro Playacar and we have also tried Occidental Tucancun, and the overall resort experience is definitely superior at the Barcelo Maya resort - that includes amenities, entertainment and food selection and variety. Barcelo Maya is great for families with kids, as there is plenty entertainment and amenities for kids and adults, and a huge variety of pools and places to snack during the day. The layout of the resort makes getting to the pools and beaches easy. The only issue I would point out is the fact, that during busier times (mid December, end of January), when the resort is close to capacity, it gets quite tricky to get a lounge chair or two on the beach or by the pool, as people tend to "reserve" them in early morning and hold on to them till sunset, which is not the right practice, but people don't seem to care. I hope the resort management can figure out a way to encourage lounge chair rotation and stop the practice of blocking them for the entire day. Also, the spa facilities with hydro therapy desperately need some maintenance in the steam rooms, it has been moldy for the last 3-4 years, and we have pointed that issue out to the USpa staff, and it hasn't been address to date. Other than that, we will keep coming back to Barcelo, but will likely try to come off-pek season, like November or June, when the resort is not at capacity and is not crowded.

Big Resort
Everything was good except the chair situation at the beaches and pool. They do not enforce the rule of not reserving chairs. Getting a chair was difficult. Many of us had to sit on the ground
