It was good!
Our experience at the Barceló Maya Riviera was overall positive. The rooms were clean, the staff was friendly, and the beach was absolutely stunning. The food was decent, though the restaurants left something to be desired. We did encounter some frustration, particularly at the Italian restaurant. On Monday, December 23rd, the buffet—which we’d been enjoying for the past four evenings—was unexpectedly closed due to occupancy levels, but there was no prior communication about this. When we walked over to the Italian restaurant to inquire about availability, the manager’s attitude was dismissive and unfriendly. While we understood the restaurant was fully booked and required reservations, the issue was less about availability and more about the lack of courtesy. Additionally, when we asked staff why the buffet was closed, we received three conflicting explanations, adding to the confusion. We also ventured over to the neighboring resort, but the experience there was disappointing and something I wouldn’t recommend. That said, we did have a great time overall. The food, when available, was enjoyable, and the beach was truly amazing. However, there’s a noticeable sense that some staff across the region may be fatigued from dealing with guests, which can impact the overall experience. Would I return? It’s a maybe for now.

Couples Trip at Barcelo Maya Riviera Adults Only
Barcelo Maya Riviera Adults Only is a great resort, it's large, kept extremely clean, the staff is amazing and the pool and beach are absolutely scenic. The food at the restaurants and buffet is average and can be bland. You also need to make reservations for all your restaurants on the first day to ensure you get a spot. The pool area is extremely large but they do keep the pool a little too cold, we heard this from multiple people also. The beach was sooooo amazing, so you can always go there. The rooms are great but they don't have face clothes so make sure you ask. Having access to all the properties is great also and the bus that runs regularly helps you see the whole place. Overall very very good resort and excellent staff and stay, would go back.

BEST Adult-Only All-Inclusive! An Honest Review (with pros/cons and restaurant rankings)
The BEST adult-only all-inclusive resort we've visited—so good, we visited twice. Here is my honest review, including pros/cons, booking tips, and my restaurant rankings! PROS: 1- PROPERTY/ROOMS: World-class property with a fantastic beach, massive pool, vast lobby area, nice gym, and large guest rooms. 2- CLEANINESS: They have hundreds of staff working to maintain the beautiful grounds and property; no doubt, this is the cleanest resort (of such size) that we've witnessed. 3- FOOD/DRINKS: The quality of food and drinks is very strong (our rankings below); of particular note, the Japanese Teppanyaki and breakfast buffet are phenomenal (which is rare for all-inclusive buffets!). 4- POOLS: The pools are large, clean, and well-designed with a variety of seating options and two excellent swim-up bars. 5- SPA: One of the best spas and massage experiences—hydrotherapy just adding to the excellence. CONS: 1- DINNER RESERVATIONS: The hotel requires reservations for dinner at the restaurants, made with Guest Services. In some ways, this was nice, but there are several HUGE disadvantages. First, we arrived for check-in at 5:30pm and were told that there were no reservations at ANY of the restaurants for that night, leaving only the buffet. That was extremely disappointing, especially since it was clear that there were many open tables when walking past the restaurants that night. Additionally, we were mostly given late times all week (between 8:00-9:30pm); that worked well for us, but I could see that being a huge problem for many guests. 2- ENTERTAINMENT: Like many all-inclusive resorts, the nightly entertainment is just okay, and to be fair, we found ourselves skipping much of it. Most disappointing, they didn't have karaoke ANY of the nights. 3- LIMITED RESTAURANTS/LACK OF STEAKHOUSE: Despite the high quality of food, only having four dinner restaurants (plus the buffet) seems to be comparatively low to other resorts. I was stunned to travel to a 5-star all-inclusive and not see a steakhouse! The only steakhouse is at the sister property (Barcelo Palace), and they weren’t able to get us a reservation at ANY time on ANY night of our stay. Finally, this is minor but they only have two beers (Corona and Modelo). 4- CHECK-IN: From our experiences, the entire staff is great, professional, and kind. However, comparatively speaking, we have definitely had warmer greetings and better check-in/food reservation experiences at other resorts. Admittedly, some resorts act TOO kind and it just seems like a show, but we have certainly stayed at resorts where the guest services would have gone out of their way to get us a dinner reservation on the night of check-in and check for cancellations at the steakhouse. ——RANKING FOOD AND DRINKS: 1) Japanese (10/10): The teppanyaki show is excellent! We recommend the surf and turf dinner, tempura roll appetizer, and fried ice cream for desert. 2) French (9/10): Very fancy five-course meal. Highlights include: beef wellington entrée, French onion soup, crème brûlée—and several awesome high-back chairs! 3) Mexican (8/10): The mid-course tacos al pastor stole the show! If you drink, try a frozen Tamarindo margarita as well! 4) Italian (6/10): Overall, pretty disappointing for us. Steak wasn't very good; pastas were just okay. Cannoli desert was good. Other food: -Breakfast Buffet (9/10) -Dinner/Lunch Buffet (6/10) -Room Service (4/10) -Lobby Bar Snacks (3/10) ——BOOKING TIPS: 1) The rooms with swim-out pools don’t seem to be worth it; we never saw anyone using one. Instead, we would recommend a higher-level ocean-view room. 2) We aren’t sure if the Premium booking is worth it; we had it once and went without once. I’d research closely and likely recommend skipping in most situations. 3) Some reviewers complain about the dinner dress code, but we thought it added to the fine dining experience! In any case, be sure you are aware of the restaurant dress code before packing. OVERALL: For us, an amazing 9.5/10, the HIGHEST-rated all-inclusive resort we've stayed at. I anticipate we'll visit again soon!
