Average place, rooms smelled of mildew, buffet pretty flavorless. Was looking for more of an authentic experience with fresh fruits and vegetables.

This is truly a 5 star resort!
This adults-only resort is very new, and ranks as one of the top 3 hotels I've ever stayed at. (And as a consultant I travelled every week for 25 years, so have lots of hotels under my belt.) The overall vibe is "chill", and I left after our week here feeling very relaxed and pampered like I was at a spa. The colors are all cool grays and neutral tones, and the walls and floors are all stone, so it looks very clean, modern, and minimalist design. And while the hotel is huge, and I was here the first week of January, it never felt crowded. Some highlights: Rooms: very firm beds, which I like. The walk in shower was roomy and very airy, with a glass wall. The rooms are quite large, and be sure to request one on the side that faces the ocean. About half the rooms there overlook the beach and ocean. Air conditioning was cold, and the hot water was hot. Everything was new and clean. The beds were huge, as big or bigger than a california king. Pools: pools are huge here, with lots of different options for seating: cabanas, clam shell shaped lounging couches, hammocks, tables and chairs, standard beach chairs. There was usually a game of volleyball or soccer going on at the beach, and the pool activities people seemed very good at recruiting bunches of people for water aerobics, dumb water games, etc. Short lines at the multiple pool bars. I had no issue with reserving spots at the pool if I went down by 8:30 to set out my towel. Food: Outstanding. There are 4 specialty themed restaurants, and each one was great. White linen tablecloths. Food comes out very fast, service was great too. Each of these are decorated with unique design touches, and are very airy due to the use of glass walls. Each one had a bar so you could get a drink while waiting for your table. Be sure to book these right when you check in, to get the locations and times that you want. Unfortunately you have to use the service desk for this, you can't call the restaurant or use an on-line app to schedule. (The front desk will help you if there's a line at the service desk). The buffet restaurant is not open at night, so be sure to book dinner reservations! The buffet was amazing for breakfast and lunch. It's huge, with many different food stations and types of food. Something for everyone. Unlike some other places I've been, there was never a shortage of "good stuff" like bacon, and the line at the omelet station were never longer than 2-3 people. Overall: I would DEFINITELY go here again for a couples getaway. I really can't think of one negative to say about this hotel.

Rudest staff I’ve ever seen at any of the resorts I’ve visited
If you don’t mind rude customer service and un personable staff then you will enjoy the resort also water in pools Water in pools is not heated and freezing cold

My favorite place to feel free and at peace.
I have stayed here now on three occasions- at least once a year and it gets harder to go home every time. The min I step foot on the resort grounds I feel my stress melt away and feel included as part of something very special. The staff are incredible - I speak some Spanish and I enjoy speaking with each person and learning their stories. The beauty of the ocean and sky are almost unbelievable and the rooms with balconies overlooking the pools and oceans are clean and so comfortable. Lastly the music! Nothing like hearing Mariachi in the rain with lighting in the sky. It’s a dream. This place is wonderful in every way.

Love the AO resort
The Adult Only is definitely worth it! We're all adults and staying here seems to be a bit more luxury than other resorts in Barcelo Maya. Besides swimming and snorkelling, there are some other free water activities which are cool. The architecture is actually special, especially the arts. I and my friends loved the Destplore adventure that we played here for free. It just led us go around the resorts to solve interesting puzzles. The coconut water here is also a signature one to try.
