If you enjoy eating, don’t come here.
Currently staying at resort as a couple. We’ve been to Jamaica several times at several different resorts. This is our first and last stay at the RIU. It’s our first full day and we are truly disappointed and really hungry! This is what I have to say about the resort so far and I really hope things get better as we are here for a week. Check in process:: The check in process was bizarre. We paid in full online directly from the RIU website. Upon checking in the rude woman at the front counter told me she had to charge my card a dollar and then check my statement to verify it was on my card, then reverse the charge once she verifies. I guess this was to verify that it was the same card that we paid the room for. I was confused as I never had to do this at another resort and the front desk woman was rude and snippy about it rather than be patient and understanding. Not a good first impression. Not only that, we needed help with our bags to our room and instead of calling one for us, as other resorts kindly so, she pretty much told us to go over and find someone. Again horrible first impression. Beach: Beach is beautiful. We came here for that as we’ve been in the area before. It’s been windy and wavy but can’t control the weather but so far cannot complain about the beach. White sand and lots of loungers. Room: We booked the king room with a step down to a little lounge area with partial ocean view. The room is nice. Bathroom has double sinks and the shower is big and great water pressure. The bed is comfortable…on the firmer side but comfortable. The balcony is huge and has been nice to sit on and watch the water. Food: Bad. This is the reason we are not impressed and won’t come back. I can not say this enough. The food is just not good. The buffet is tolerable at best..just to get food in our system. Not only does the food taste mediocre but the sanitary practices are questionable. Saw hair in food. One of the workers was mixing the fish with his bare hands. No gloves. Bread for burger was stale because they are left out exposed. One guy picked up a bun checked it out and put it back because it’s just sitting out exposed. Burgers are grilled then left sitting in a container in a pile and just unappetizing. Cheese and condiments we notice are not on ice as they should be. The buffet is just gross. The resort needs to pay attention and have better safe food handling protocols. We have never complained at a resort before but we haven’t eaten a good meal in almost 2 days and we just got fed up that we spoke with the assistant manager right away. I can say he was very attentive and listened to our concerns and told us he would relay these concerns and go to the buffet and see what’s going on himself. So I’m hoping he truly takes our concerns seriously and things improve at some point. Although I cannot imagine the quality of food will improve. We went to the Thai restaurant and it was ok at best. The unappetizing thing we noticed is that there are place mats that don’t get changed or cleaned between patrons and they place clean utensils right on these mats. Utensils should be rolled in the napkins. Again poor sanitary practices. You would think after Covid, these small things would be common sense by now. We are trying the steakhouse over the next week so I’m hoping we get a good meal. I did ask the assistant manager if the burger comes from the buffet and he said the restaurant has their own grill so it’s fresh. So we will see about that. I can say the breakfast buffet was good. It’s so far by far the best meal we’ve eaten. The grill by the pool, husband had jerk chicken and rice. The chicken was chewy and rice tasted very chemically..jerk sauce had no flavour.. he had to throw out the meal. Too long to wait for the burger so we left,, not to mention I saw a container of what I believe to be mayonnaise sitting out , as well as the cheese,, not on ice or anything. Again unappetizing. Honestly I could just eat a burger every day when I’m at a resort . At other resorts they have a great grill that u can go to late at night and get burgers and fresh buns and fries with just condiment packages. But not at this resort. They have a bar but I don’t think it serves anything other than nacho chips and cheese. Again we are hungry and we are tempted to just go to BK and grab a burger. Resort: Resort is big. For us it’s just too many people and I think that’s the issue when it comes to the food. They need either another buffet or more restaurants to accommodate the pure volume of people. They also need to have better menu options. The options are limited at the restaurants u need reservations for. The Italian should have spaghetti and meatballs and several different types of pasta, Italian soup… just more options! The gourmet same thing. Staff: Hit or miss. Some are super friendly. For example whenever we need housekeeping they come right away. We don’t get our room cleaned every day, as we don’t need someone making our bed or having someone come in with a dirty mop mopping our floors. We just need fresh towels and toilet paper. We are pretty easy that way. Some other staff seem to have attitude and are just short in their response and are not welcoming. I’ve worked in customer service and some need serious retraining. Maybe it’s because the resort is so big and it’s just too much. Overall, so far…not the greatest experience. We are even contemplating on checking out early and going somewhere else. We’ve been to Jamaica 8-9 times over the last several years and usually stayed at the jewel, which was reasonably priced with great food. Unfortunately the sandals is buying them up and as you know the sandals is really expensive. We stayed at the sandals Ochi before and the food there was great! But again we can’t spend over 3k per person as the sandals charges. That was a treat for us. Since Covid prices for all the resorts have gone up significantly. the RIU was reasonably priced and has a great beach and this is the reason we chose it this time. But honestly I would just bite the bullet and spend more at a nicer resort with better food options as food is important with an all inclusive. But at that rate, spending 3k or more per person for one week is just not worth it to us. we can go to Europe for that price. I think I’m just over the all inclusive and right now I’m really over the RIU. I’ll post an update if things get better with the food… but not holding my breath. If you’re at the RIU Ocho Rios, let me know if you’re experiencing the same.

Hotel stay from hell
We stayed at this property 2 summers ago. So we thought it would be a good choice. It was expensive and your checkin staff was rude and unhelpful. You messed up our reservation and my sister ended up paying for a junior suite and was in a regular room. Your food is horrible. Undercooked curry chicken undercooked oxtail undercooked cow foot. No real salad bar. You gave us green bananas one day that were not boiled. You need a chef. Who serves Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve? Who fries a whole grouper. Groupers are not a frying fish. Hard as a rock fritters and fried dumplings. If you’re gonna serve this slop give it to people who did not grow up in Jamaica and who do not know what Jamaican food should taste like. This was our 3rd time on your property. There was 15 of us and needless to say we will not be back.

Disappointing, 2nd trip there and has got worse, staff need some customer service lessons.
Unfortunately the service at this hotel has brought down my score, visited in December for Christmas 2024, the hotel itself is beautiful, well looked after although since our last visit in 2022 the rooms have got a little dated and the tiles on the floor in the junior suite building has deteriorated a lot since we was last there. They are always painting and cleaning and keeping the grounds very nice but they need to update some of the other areas. negatives and the reason for my 2 star review… Staff and service terrible, the staff in the dining room and on the bars par a few are so miserable and unhappy, they seem like they hate their job and don’t want to be there. My husband asked for a drink at the bar and said if that’s ok and the bar tender said “well it has to be” , sometimes your stood at the bar waiting to order a drink and the staff are there ignoring you cleaning up, the supervisor once told them them to keep their eyes open and pointed at us to come and serve us. There were lots of times we couldn’t get a drink when we was eating in the buffet, nobody came to attend to us we had to go help outselves at the machines which you’re not supposed to. Even when we did get a drink on the odd occasion it’s a small glass and soon runs out they don’t come back and ask if you want another, if you try to flag a staff member down they don’t seem happy you’re asking for another drink. The buffet staff serving the food are also so miserable and don’t seem to want to answer you when you ask what something is, the food isn’t labelled clearly and not everything is labelled so you don’t know what it is and don’t want to try it. The hotel was very busy and food wasn’t replenished quick enough. I waited over 5 minutes at the pizza station the server behind the counter saw a line of people waiting for pizza she then came over after leaving us standing there for a while and started making some more pizzas to put them in the oven and the oven was empty! She could have told everyone waiting there that there weren’t any in the oven and we would have to wait for those to be cooked but no she just ignored everyone in the line. I wasn’t keen on the food, everything was served on the bone, I only eat boneless chicken. So struggled to find anything. My husband is Jamaican he was born and raised in Jamaica so he knows what the food is supposed to taste like, he said some was ok but others was tasteless like the jerk chicken and the plantain was chewy and not ready to have been picked. Also as a 5 star hotel you would expect a spot to get icecream, waffles, crepes etc. but there’s only a small section with a few flavours of ice cream which you can’t get when you’re by the pool, you have to go in the buffet. The staff need to take a lesson from the entertainment team, you don’t pay your money and be on vacation to feel like you’re bothering people to ask for anything or just being there. Seems like you only get a smile and some good service if you tip! I don’t pay £10,000 for a holiday to tip for good I expect service with a smile for £10k and a 5star hotel. Kids club and kids entertainment- very poor Kids club is only open 10-12 and 3-5pm for kids under 12, it’s open on a night but parents have to stay so we didn’t use it daughter is 10 and wanted to go in the soft play with her younger brother one day but she was told no she’s too tall, they shouldn’t have a kids club for up to age 12 if they can’t use most of it. There was nothing else for her to do there apart from watch a tiny tv with cartoons in for little ones. So she didn’t use it. I feel like they are missing something for this age group. The next teen club starts from age 13. The night entertainment for the kids is only half an hour long and again too babyish for my 10 year old so she didn’t join in. Other hotels I’ve went to have had discos, cinema nights, party’s, football games, competitions etc they need to better. Also there isn’t much going on in the day, they had one pool noodle race which the kids enjoyed but that was it. They could do more games for the kids. Adult entertainment, ok but same as last time we were 2 years ago, and they do the same entertainment every week, so if you’re going like us for 2 weeks it gets very boring watching the same exact show from the week before. Should be on a 1 week rotation. Gym- terrible for the size of the hotel they had 3 treadmills and only one working! Very poor. MUSIC AND PARTYS! We’re in Jamaica and I felt like I was in Ibiza or a pub in England the music was awful! Please sort that out, play Jamaican
