  One of the best caribbean holidays we have had.

  I really do not understand any low ratings for this resort. We have been on many southern vacations and this was one of the most pleasant. Unless the resort is very high priced and small, you are going to wait in line for buffets unless you dine early or late. We found the food in the buffets bountiful and excellent and the steak restaurant fantastic. We had 17 in our group and I think everyone would say everything at the resort was great. The really well maintained hotel has beautiful facilities - seating around the water features near the lobby seduce one to sit with a latte and pastry outside Aromes and enjoy the surroundings. The children loved the ice cream and crepes stand, available throughout the day, the beach volleyball and mocktails available at the many bars. There was a centre for teens to play foozeball , ping pong, video games etc. The resort was on a beautiful, wide, long beach - perfect for walking along or bodysurfing in fairly gentle waves. Loved the wrist band with room unlocking feature, the ease of getting towels anytime and lots of chairs at the beach or around the pools. Unless you are unusually fussy you will really enjoy The Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres. One slight negative was the difficulty in making reservations for our large group to eat together.

  Superb

  Beautifully appointed suites with spacious dressing room, living room, bedroom and bathroom. Huge balcony - we booked a “privileged” suite which came with sea view and access to BLoved - a restaurant just for Privileged guests, serving a la carte breakfast lunch and dinner (fabulous food). Freddy (the captain) looked after us royally! As did his trusty team Merida, Daniela, Yaren and Eduardo The various a la carte restaurants require a booking and with a small window to secure an earlier slot, we found ourselves setting an alarm for midnight when the slots were released! That said, we had the wonderful BLoved restaurant not requiring a reservation and the buffet was as good as any I’ve been to over my many years of travelling. Infact breakfast has a few more unique stations which gave it an edge. Privileged guests get a private seating area and additional attentive servers. There’s 2 pools. A quiet serene pool with swim up bar and attentive waiting staff to keep you topped up with drinks and, what I call the “party pool” with all day nonstop activities, with quizzes, music and fun and games for all ages. This also has a swim up bar and those marvellous smiling waiting staff ensuring everyone is looked after. The beach is cleared of seaweed daily and offers an array of bars offering yet more drinks for those enjoying the many sun-beds dotted amongst the palm trees. Reading some of the less favourable reviews of this hotel totally baffle me. I have visited 75 countries world wide and regard myself well travelled. My third visit to Mexico, The Grand Catalonia hotel delivered on quality and service with a wide variety of food available 24 hours. We found it to be clean, comfortable, chic and frankly great value. Despite the awful weather, staff greeted us with a smile and were all very professional. Mexico truly is the king of the all inclusive and Catalonia definitely exceeded our expectations Yes, you may queue for coffee or to be seated at the buffet at busy times but as a consequence you enter a restaurant which is constantly cleaned, well organised & calm inside. No overcrowding. No unmade tables. There’s plenty of restaurants to chose from here too -Steakville was our favourite a la carte restaurant where staff went over and above to ensure we had an excellent experience. BLoved was a very close second. The lobby bar staff were all excellent (Javier is a legend and Francisco also looked after us royally!) and although we didn’t go to the theatre much, the shows we saw were excellent (Michael Jackson was amazing!) Privileged suite was a totally good call as the benefits definitely elevated our experience.

  worth every penny!

  We have gone twice now. Once in March 2024 for 5 days and in Jan 2025 for 7 Worth every penny. We got the privileged rooms which are worth it. It's the little things, sitting in the sound-absorbing area of the buffet, the pur beach bar, which is only for privileged guests, and sectioned-off chairs nearby, and access to Bloved. Geroge and Carlos at the pur bar are a fantastic service team. They have the best drinks, with the loby bar in second. The front desk team is great, and so are guest services. Food-wise the app is decent and opens at midnight, and books two days in advance. we would go to Beloved and just walk in whenever we wanted on the days we couldn't get a reservation. That said, the buffet is amazing, especially for breakfast. We would return for sure. we already have! It's worth the price and the beach is calmer that the hotel zone.

  Disorganized guest service, long lines for breakfast and less variety of food

  The various restaurants on 59th avenue are amazing but the main buffet restaurant could do better with food variety. What was frustrating were the long lines for breakfast. We asked for a manager to voice our concern but there was none available either for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Alternative was to go to Aromes coffee shop for breakfast but again there were long lines there too. Our first experience with Catalonia but we will avoid next time. How would the owners of this hotel feel if they had to wait in long lines just to have a morning breakfast ? Hope they are reading this. The guest services with Salvatore did nothing to help us when we told him about a drilling sound happening at 10.30 p.m. that kept us awake at night, waited on feedback but got none. Same drilling sound repeated at 3.30 p.m. the following day and we were asked to inform guest services, again nothing was done till we informed Narisco at reception who immediately informed the manager, the drilling sound stopped after that. We reminded the lady twice at guest service to give us an umbrella as it rained sometimes, she assured us she would give us one but again nothing happened. We had to ask Narisco who immediately gave us one. More often than not there is nobody available at guest service and we had to keep waiting for either Salvatore or the lady to show up but both despite repeated requests did nothing nor provided any feedback. We made it a point to go directly to Narisco for any help when he was around, he was amazingly quick and resourceful right until our departure. Food in the evening at Tao Cat and Barcelona vegan restaurant were truly good. Julio at Tao Cat and Ismael at Barcelona were excellent.

  Low variety on buffet restaurant and long lineups

  The buffet restaurant is a joke, we had to wait in line for 45 minutes, 3 consecutive days just for breakfast. Once we got inside the restaurant, same questions of room number, allergies and number of persons had to be given everyday - all this can be done once on check in at reception or in the restaurant. After waiting 45 minutes we had to wait for a server to come and take us to a table so add another 5 - 10 minutes. The lineups included families with small kids who of course are also hungry in the morning. Food variety at the buffet restaurant is the poorest we have seen so far either in Mexico or any Carribean resort, some of the food was recycled during lunch or dinner. There was never a supervisor or manager available who could look into buffet issues. Complaining to the reception yielded no response or feedback.
