Exelente
My partner and I had a very good time with this hotel. Both the indoor and outdoor spaces are very clean and well-kept. The beach is a dream, also very clean and with a fairy tale sunset. All The staff was excellent: professional and very friendly. Therefore we felt very well welcomed and pampered. Particularly from the girls who greeted us at the buffet in both the adult and familia part, wonderful. To the cafeteria team in the Lobby familia who made us delicious frappuccinos. To the animation guys, who are pure energy and positivity: Juan, Rene, Maria, Yuliano... we would like to name them all :) The next time we would like to stay at the Romana, we would most likely choose the Hilton in Bayahibe. Nice holiday but not a 5-star experience
We stayed 2 weeks at the Hilton la Romana on the adult only side and had purchased the enclave package with butler service. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, however we felt the experience was quite far from a 5-star one, especially if you are used to travel to high-end all inclusive resorts. Let's start with the positive: - the property is immaculate, very beautiful, big and well maintained - despite being quite rocky on the adult side, the beach was very nice with crystal clear water and white sand. The nicest part is definitely on the family side though, which is less rocky. In general, there are quite a lot of sun loungers available even though most of them are not in the shade. - overall the staff were friendly, even though it was a bit of a hit or miss in some cases. Speaking spanish definitely helps as their english is quite poor for most of them. - the rooms are starting to show their age, but overall it was fine. Nothing spectacular though. - Housekeeping was thorough and consistent, which we appreciated There were also quite a few areas of improvement in our opinion: - the food was our main issue. We tried all the a la carte restaurants and buffets several times, and the experience was really not 5 star. 90% of the dishes were the same every day at the buffet, and the taste was quite bland and uninteresting. The "French" and "Italian" restaurants were honesly horrendous, not to mention the fact that the ambiance is very stiff - it basically felt like an airport lounge. The buffet is always closed on the adult side in the evening, which means that you are forced to use the one on the family side unless you go for one of the a la carte, where the menu never changes. During the day, you can only eat burgers, hot dogs, nachos, or pizza around the pool/beach. The meat was good in general, and the breakfast on the adult only side had a nice selection including fresh juices. If you are looking for a gastronomic experience, you will be disappointed. - we don't know how much we paid for the enclave experience because it was included by default for us, but I wouldn't have booked if I could have. It essentially gives you access to a dedicated pool and lunch in Mare which is a la carte, but since the staff does not check anyone around the enclave area, you can basically use it without being an enclave member anyways. Really not worth the money. - Our butler (Byron) was nice, but we didn't feel that it made such a difference during our trip. With the butler (who is only available from 9h to 17h), you get a cooler with drinks in the morning (water, beer etc) and a fruit platter in the afternoon (somehow not every day though). Is it worth 200$ per week + 15$ per additional day after that? In hindsight we don't think so. After all, the only thing you have to do on holidays is getting drinks and there are several bars in the resort so you might as well do it yourself and save that money. - The entertainment is quite lacking for such a big resort. During the day, there are a few activities such as zumba in the water, pilates etc, but that's basically it. A lot of the activities mentioned on the schedule simply don't take place without notice. At night, there is no entertainment, except a musician once in a while and a silent disco which feels quite underwhelming. If you want to get a tennis lesson for instance, you would have to pay extra and the instructor is not often there so you would need to book a few days in advance and you can't rely on the times indicated in the app - The loungers at the main pool on the adult side don't have any mattresses, making them quite uncomfortable since they are designed to be equipped with one. The pool on the family side has them, and the enclave pools as well. It should be quite easy and quick to solve especially given the number of people who already mentioned it in their reviews. - The hotel has a rule stating that unattended sun loungers for more than 1h will be made available for other guests. However in practice the hotel does not enforce this rule whatsoever. Before 7 am, most of the "nicest" spots will be taken by guests who leave their towels and sometimes don't even come back until several hours later. It has been mentioned in many reviews about the resort and the management really needs to do something about this too. Again here, not a 5-star experience. - The light on the balcony of every single room is on until at least midnight and cannot be turned off from the room. If you like sleeping in the dark, mind you it might be difficult. Never seen that in any hotel before, especially when there are no shutters. Finding out how the light switches work in the rooms requires some skills as well. All in all, we felt that the value for money is not great. At almost 500$ per night, you would expect the food and entertainment to be much better. Unfortunately because of that we won't return to the Hilton la Romana.

Outstanding resort for couples
We've been back a week now and my opinion has not changed. @Hilton La Romana has been one of our best Caribbean resort experiences. We give it 9.5/10. Excellent food, accommodations, location, beach and good water activities, but just a little difficult to book preferred time for water sports and a max of 2 hrs. per day. I recommend Hilton La Romana to everyone. Takeaways: Tipping is not necessary but appreciated, dress is casual, bring bug spray if you're going to the beach (Our room had insect repellent that we used on ourselves before heading to the beach - it's natural, geranium-based), Enclave is worth it - no butler service for us, turn-down service nightly with chocolate, water in all the restaurants is filtered (don't drink tap water). They give you plenty of bottled water in your room. Ask for a dehumidifier for your room upon arrival, you'll sleep better. Neither of us got the slightest sick. Nightlife is next to nil and that's what we wanted! No nightclub and the bars close at 11 p.m. One show each evening around 9 p.m. at the outdoor theatre. Magic show, dance etc. Come here to relax! One caveat. We booked an excursion with the hotel. The 3rd party supplier was called Wild On and we went to Santo Domingo for the day. This is a 3rd rate supplier: no working seat belts in the back of the passenger van, stopped at more shops than heritage buildings, a taxi took us from the hotel to the pick-up spot to get on the passenger van and the taxi parked in the middle of highway collector lanes (on those white diagonal lines) to wait for the pick up. That was scary, but on the return, the van dropped us off in the middle of a four way intersection (on those diagonal white lines) parallel to a highway and the guide told us to stay there until the taxi came! As if! The 6 or so of us walked across the intersection/highway off ramp! to a grassy spot by the side of the road to wait for our taxi. It was outrageously dangerous! A brand name like Hilton should not be involved with such a supplier. The cost, including lunch was $99 US. In hindsight, we should have booked our excursion from home, where we could properly research the company. We'd love to go back to the resort despite our day-trip experience! The resort is outstanding. Never been to anything like it.

Good time in the D.R. (DO?)
We came with one other couple that we've vacationed with numerous times. We thought this was the best overall facility we've been to. The staff was great, very attentive. We loved our flamboyant hostess Julianna, who seemed to be everywhere all day. Amazingly, she always seemed to remember us. Food options were great and varied. Onside activities kept us entertained. The ladies took most advantage of morning yoga and stretching. The birder got many new ones added to his life list, including seeing a baby ash-faced owl. Having the family side separated but close to the adults only was nice. We saw many great night shows and several individual entertainers in the lounges. Kudos to the circus show that put on a show despite the rain. Our only complaint would be spotty Wi-Fi in our room. If we ever visit the D.R. again we'll definitely consider this place.
