If you're looking to relax and eat/drink well, look somewhere else.
This was a week of inconsistent service, inconsistent quality, and lack of attention to detail. Go elsewhere if you're looking to feel relaxed, appreciated, and fed well after paying a lot to stay at a resort. It is reminiscent of summer camp. Dreams Las Mareas is less safe, because of poor food preparation practices noted all week long. A funny/not funny situation occurred last week at Portofino Restaurant: Two people at a table order a panna cotta for dessert. One panna cotta has a dark chocolate wedge. One panna cotta has the indentation of where a chocolate wedge once was. The person without the wedge says "I'd like a chocolate wedge too" the waiter laughs at the request and walks away, never to return. We are never to return to this resort. This week was an exercise of patience. Costa Rica is lovely. Pura Vida.

A New Year’s Trip to Remember
We spent seven days over New Year’s at this resort, and while much has already been said, here are some highlights that stood out to us: Weather The weather was good throughout our stay. Each day started with a bit of early morning cloud cover, but the sun soon came out, bringing comfortable warmth with daytime highs around 28°C. A couple of days saw some rain, but it was short-lived and didn’t impact our plans. Overall, December provided perfect weather for a tropical escape. Beach and Ocean The ocean was truly sublime. Most days offered waves, perfect for boogie boarding, and the water was warm. Unlike the white sand beaches of the Atlantic Caribbean, this beach has dark, volcanic sand, which is equally stunning in its own unique way. Pools The pools were many, lovely, and consistently warm, adding to the relaxing atmosphere. New Year’s Eve Gala The NYE gala was absolutely stunning—the best we’ve experienced after years of celebrating at all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. The food was superb in terms of variety, quality, and presentation, the entertainment spectacular, and the fireworks were a true “wow” moment. The setup was really beautiful. While the gala is included in your stay, you can pay $200 per person for reserved seating, which includes an equivalent credit for premium alcohol. This isn’t necessary, as there is ample seating for those who don’t reserve. However, we chose to pay for the reserved seating and found it worth the cost to avoid the hassle of saving spots. A quick note: The infinity pool and upper pool were closed for the gala setup, as tables are placed around and over them. This didn’t bother us, and the resort didn’t feel crowded because of it. Cabanas We rented a beach cabana for four days, and it was well worth it. Interestingly, even though the resort was at full capacity, we noticed that the pool cabanas weren’t fully booked. Food The food at this resort is excellent by all-inclusive standards. That said, if you’re comparing it to high-end cruises or luxury non-all-inclusive resorts, it won’t quite meet that standard. This is a high-end all-inclusive, but it’s not the Four Seasons. For what it is, though, it’s very good and offers plenty of variety. Excursions We did two excursions with Frank the Tank, and both were fantastic: 1. Rainforest Tour There is 1.5-hour drive to La Cruz to meet up with the tour guide and group, which makes for a full-day adventure but is absolutely worth it. We saw sloths, tropical frogs, butterflies, and beautiful flora. The hike through the rainforest with its hanging bridges and a waterfall stop was a 10/10 experience. Highly recommended! 2. 2.5-Hour ATV Tour This tour explored the local area around the resort and included stops at five stunning beaches and time for a swim. Another highly recommended excursion. Rooms and Wildlife We stayed in Building 5, occupying two tropical view rooms. One room faced the mountain/jungle, while the other faced the pools with a large tree directly in front. Both rooms offered incredible monkey sightings each morning—dozens of young capuchins played in the tree, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Building 5 seems to be the “monkey building,” as we saw them on the balconies and even in the hallways. We also spotted spider monkeys, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, and iguanas around the resort. Guests in other buildings mentioned they didn’t see monkeys, so Building 5 might be the prime spot for wildlife lovers. Final Thoughts This was an exceptional trip at a truly special property in a breathtaking country. Every trip is what you make of it, and this one was unforgettable for us. Pura Vida!

Beautiful location, issues with room maintenance wasted our time
The resort is in an incredible cove with a beautiful beach and excellent tidepooling. It is worth the distance from the airport. The rooms were clean and had nice amenities, but our room had multiple maintenance issues (lack of hot water, safe didn’t work, missing blanket for rollaway bed) that ate up our time to get the management to send someone to fix it. The evening entertainment kept us and our child up at night despite earplugs, as it takes place in the courtyard created by all the guest rooms. Buffet was varied and provided a diversity of options. We had positive experiences at Himitsu and El Patio, not so much at Protofino and Oceana/Seaside.

Nightmare las mareas
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Rundown property. Unclean. Poor quality food. Restaurants do not take reservations so long waits. It was a zoo. I would name it nightmare las mareas. Concierge only selling Marriott timeshare and points

Great resort vibes
We found the resort to be clean, the staff worked very hard, lots of pool space, and nice rooms. We really enjoyed the overall vibe. We paid extra to be Preferred, but did not find it to be worth the extra expense. Our main reason for upgrading was because we had been told that Preferred guests could make dinner reservations, however, upon arriving we found we had been missed by the hotel employee who had sold us on the upgrade. As a result, we were not able to sit together (we were a group of 12) at most dinners, unless we lined up prior to the restaurant opening for dinner and in the case, we would need to eat at 6pm (when they opened for dinner). This was earlier than we would have liked. There are other perks for being Preferred, but we didn't feel the value was there. Other than that, we enjoyed the variety of restaurants, activities, beach and pools. If you have the opportunity to stay over New Year's Eve, I highly recommend it. The resort goes all out with the most lavish party we have ever seen at a resort. The setup begins a few days prior and tables are set up all around the upper pool. Buffet stations are set up all around as well (each one is different, so be sure to check them all out). A live band plays music all evening until a DJ takes over at midnight and keeps going until after 2am. At midnight there are fireworks that went on for close to ten minutes. Really great experience all around!
