8.5/10
The views are amazing, breathtaking for sure. Unfortunately they don’t have a beach you can get in to, so they offer maroma beach which I highly recommend. One of the best beaches I’ve been to. The food is delicious to say the least. I was astonished by the authenticity in the Mexican food they had during breakfast! Dinner is delicious as well, not Mexican at all but still really good. We didn’t have a single issue with housekeeping. Every day we had new towels, bed was made, trash was taken, etc, etc… the pools are really nice as well. Bars are not the best but not the worst some bartenders can be rude but I understand to an extent when you deal with drunk folks. Some staff was a bit rude. During a dinner reservation the waiter made a weird face when I had said I didn’t want any wine off the wine menu because I didn’t want to pay lol. One golf cart guy was kind of rude as well but like I said I get it to an extent. Sometimes it feels like the golf cart drivers avoid you so they don’t have to take you but after all the food me and my wife ate, the walk wasn’t so bad. My wife and I decided for dinner on our last night we wanted to go explore the streets of playa del Carmen (the municipio) so we asked for a taxi and our taxi driver was the best. Her name is Sharon and she’s from where Dallas, where I grew up! Same city and everything. She’s such a sweetheart and she even gave us a taco tour! She showed us the best spots and even waited for us. She dropped us off and the municipio and said she’ll wait for us until we’re done and she’ll drop us off. She didn’t up charge us at all. She gave us the price of what the hotel sheet said. Definitely recommend her. Her number is +52 56 2666 8651 if yall are interested. She didn’t pay me or ask me to write a good review about her but honestly she made our trip so fun and memorable I had to write about her. The hotel itself is nice and would come again.

Last minute couples trip!
We are Ruby members who recently stayed at El Dorado Royale in a sapphire beachfront room. We were in building 55 which is the southernmost building on the property. Our room was fairly basic, but always clean and we loved our balcony overlooking the ocean. We also loved the proximity to the Kick restaurant/bar and also the members only beach area. It was a short walk to the main pool and the more quiet and laid back pool behind the main pool. We also didn't feel like it was an excessive walk to the main buidling but if you wanted to go to the casitas area or Generations for restaurants, there were always plenty of golf carts going around to pick you up. This was a last minute trip so we only stayed four nights and we ate dinners at Santa Fe, Jade, Wine Kitchen and D'italia Casitas. We ate lunch at La Isla, Kampai, and Kick twice. Our feeling is that the food was good, with a few dishes we'd call great. Our favorite meal was Jade with the Mongolia dish and tuna sashimi. Very very good. The burgers at Kick were really good. We didn't eat a single bad thing at all, we do recommend ordering several things off the menu. Most portions are pretty small which is how we like it so we can try several things. Highly recommend ordering coffee or cappucino after your meal with dessert. Such good coffee! We love the martini bar in the lobby before dinner at night and the bellini bar after dinner is always nice. If the main pool bar is busy there are plenty of places to go to get a drink without having to get into the water or push past the people who sit there all day long. As members we had a butler(s). Jhonny and Isabel shared this responsibility for us and they were just delightful! So courteous and nice to talk to and also so responsive for the requests we had. First day there, via whatsapp, I asked Jhonny if we could swap out our in room wine for a different kind. I had also asked if the beer in the fridge could be stocked with just one of the four kinds offered. He had it done within the hour while we were out eating and then showed up later with real wine glasses because he noticed we didn't have any stemmed wine glasses set up in the room. Such a nice touch! Every morning he would stop in and bring us fresh ice. He also filled in on the two occasions that our coffee bar did not get reset and we were out of coffee. Isabel was also helpful when we decided, rather last minute, to get massages for the next day and had has set up, again via whatsapp, within like 20. minutes. They both also arranged for transport on a couple of occassions for us and scheduled our luggage pickup. They were wonderful!! Also, I have to say this is the first time we had a mini fridge that was actually really cold! It was wonderful! Finally on the pro side, I've ready many reviews where people complain about the app but we used it with zero troubles. Was able to make reservations all four nights on it with no issue. Was nice to see menus beforehand to help decide where to eat. A few things that could be improved or added. Room service was very unreliable. We expect any time you go to an all inclusive resort that in a week probably one of your orders isn't going to show up, and that generally the time they quote you is going to be off one way or another. Its really no big deal, however, we were only there four nights and attempted to order room service for a late lunch four times and twice it didn't show up at all, and once it took almost 2 hours even though they said it'd be 45 minutes. That seems a bit excessively unreliable. I will say if you've ordered and it's taking much longer than they said, call back and they can tell you if it's on its way or not. For a Mexcian resort, it seems odd that they don't have a dedicated mexican restaurant for dinner. When we first joined (ten years ago!) Rincon was open at night with a Mexican menu and it was wonderful. Not sure why they don't do that anymore. The beach chairs are looking pretty tired and old and are not comfortable. The members only area has ten bali beds that have to be reserved with the beach butlers stationed in the area. We were able to get a bed two of four days but the system is very confusing. They have a notebook, one page per day with 1 - 10 going down the left side. Names written in the beds that are reserved. Third day we asked for one, he looked at the page which I could see, only two names written down, and clearly the beds were empty and I was told they were full. We sat on the beach area in front of that space and at least 7 of them remained unused all day. Similar thing happened on the fourth day. Not sure the system here but didn't feel like a great member experience for sure. All in all was a great trip, loved the beachfront location especially when it would occasionally rain and we could enjoy it from our balcony. Great butlers! We will be back!

Wedding
First off, I’d like to say I’ve visited El Dorado Royale 3 times and love this resort. I’ll share resort pros and cons, followed by a wedding specific review. Pros: Good food, lovely staff, stunning resort, fun activities! Cons: The regular suites are starting to become outdated. Many of our guests stayed in these rooms and they looked very plain/stale and the color scheme does not present luxury resort. Most guests described the rooms as “okay” and we felt slightly embarrassed to have them in those rooms. Luckily our travel agent @TripGuy Mitch Toren upgraded our room to one of the rooms for members only and wow it was stunning! I strongly encourage the resort to update their rooms, it would really elevate the resort as a whole. Wedding: We fell in love with the wedding venues on this resort, and it was an easy decision to book a date! We had an early mishap and our wedding date was double booked so we had to select a new date. They were kind enough to include some services into our package to make up for the issue, and we moved on from that happily. We were told the planning process began 9 months before the wedding. My husband and I were excited and eager to start, but the lack of communication was actually alarming. We didn’t start planning the wedding until 2.5 months before the date! I understand that they are a well oiled wedding planning machine, and honestly 2.5 months was enough time to plan everything (luckily I had the time to dedicate), but had they just been transparent and told us that the wedding planning process starts at 2 months prior, then that would have saved us 7 months of stress feeling like we’re being ghosted lol. A few weeks before the wedding we were introduced to our wedding day coordinator, Cecilia, and she is AMAZING. Super responsive and kind. We love her and the wedding went PERFECT. Every detail my husband and I wanted, was executed. Our guests were stunned by the beauty of the ceremony and reception (extra shoutout to the gorgeous florals). We received comments about how well the day flowed and that the food was outstanding. The DJ took our playlists and really understood our music choices and the dance floor was quite literally never empty. We are beyond happy with the end result.

5* price tag, for a 3* ( at best ) hotel
I checked into this ‘hotel’ after an 11hr flight. I had booked us a swim up. Ocean view suite, and was so looking forward to it. That was short lived. Upon check in, we along with another couple were told that we would have to have pizza or burger as all the restaurants were full. Luckily ( or so I thought ) I managed to book Santa Fe ( the steakhouse ) for 9pm. We then went to our room (205) in much need of a shower and a change of clothes before dinner. The room was filthy dirty. The toilet was dirty with what looked like sticky urine on it, along with short dark curly hair that I can only assume was pubic in nature. The bin next to the toilet was splashed, covered in dirt of an unknown origin, but you can use your imagination. The shower had a cover over the drain that was held on with one screw but it didn’t have the cover in place. This left an open filthy drain. There was a liquid that had been spilt next to the bed and left. The chairs and sofa were only fit for the rubbish tip. They were old and badly stained. The table where you were supposed to sit at with the dirty chairs was just as dirty. It had sticky old food remnants on it. I picked up the phone to ring reception, and that was also dirty. The lighting is poor ( but not so poor you can’t see the filth ), the decor I suspect is still the original from when it was first built, and it has no USB ports. If you’re from Europe make sure you dig out your old travel plugs. After reception initially refusing to send a manager over to our room, Katherine arrived. She was polite and professional and was in agreement that the room wasn’t fit for purpose. We then moved to 305, which was cleaner ( not hard as 205 was filthy ) It felt like a cheap nasty motel that you see in the movies. The type the fugitives hide out in. No time for a shower or change of clothes we set off for dinner. We ordered steak. One medium rare, the other medium. The medium came out badly burnt around the edges. Both ‘steaks’ were just a huge chunk of nasty fat that I wouldn’t give to my dogs, let alone a human. The following day we met with Giselle, who was duty manager and Sergio from guest relations. Both were again as professional and polite as Katherine had been the night before. They listened, and agreed they had fallen short on their standards. Whilst we stayed in 305 for the rest of the holiday, we had the contact details of Giselle, Katherine and Sergio if we needed anything. They went above and beyond to ensure the rest of our stay was as it should be. We mostly used the pool bar by Casitas’s 25. Eduardo was the bartender. Excellent cocktails, and always had a smile no matter what. Habb the Indian restaurant was in our opinion the best. The service was excellent as was the food. We went twice and didn’t feel rushed, but were allowed to enjoy the food at our own pace. Roberto was attentive in a subtle way, and very in tune with all the customers. We ate lunch at Kick, and Angel was there. He was also part of the breakfast team. Again, a lovely member of staff who genuinely took time to ask how your day was. We went to Fuentes one night. The group was small ( about 24 ) The food was excellent and it was lovely to see the cooking demonstration then taste the food. Some people spoke all through the demonstrations taking no notice of the chef, which is rude. One thing I found off putting was when the food was served, the waiters came out dancing to music. It was like a badly played out scene from the film, The Full Monty. It really isn’t needed. One day we spent at the casitas by 31. We had the pleasure of Alberto serve our drinks. He was lovely, accommodating and professional. All with a smile. We were talked into getting a massage by Victor ( great selling skills ) I had Irene and she was excellent. I recommend her to everyone I spoke to who were contemplating a massage. However, I will say the spa staff have to be more vigilant. My niece and I walked into the female changing room to find a naked man in there who’d just gotten out of the shower. There were two ladies in there, equally as shocked as we were. When told to leave he said he thought it was mixed facilities and he’d just be a minute getting ready!!!!!! We told the staff who were shocked, but didn’t do much. In fairness, I think they were as shocked as us. The people driving the golf carts on the whole are a blessing ( especially when your feet are hurting ) We had one who’s name we forget but he would shout tequila to us ever time he drove past or picked us up.. he was so funny and chatty, but always professional. One day he picked up some guests when we were on the cart. They were rude. No please or thank you, just a sense of entitlement. We witnessed another guest tip him 3 pesos ( 12p ) How insulting and disrespectful The grounds are immense, and beautifully kept. I love nature and was so pleased to see that the hotel look after the wildlife that have made the hotel their home. There are feeding stations for the stray cats, and native raccoons🦝 . There’s even an alligator called Freda they look after and feed. The part of the hotel we were in I suspect is the old original hotel.. very dated rooms. You then have the casitas and Generations which is obviously built this century as it’s very modern.. Please take the time to acknowledge the staff. Remember, please and thank you cost nothing. Whilst you’re on holiday enjoying yourselves, many staff are separated from family so they can earn a wage. I’ve mentioned a few staff who went above and beyond to make sure we had the holiday we should’ve. That said there were far more. Would I return to the hotel.. for the staff yes, for the room type we were given, no.
