    Overall a solid resort

RESORT-mature landscaping, beautiful pools. I believe this resort is about 20 years old. It is solid with good bones and a beautiful grand staircase. However, the furnishings could use a refresh. The couches in the lobby looked as though they came from a second hand store. The resort is a bit further from Cancun than we wanted to be. It was about 40 min to get to Cancun. The cost of taxi from the resort to Cancun was $50 one way. BEACH- We are beach lovers so not being able to swim in this water was a bummer. There was quite a bit of seaweed. Literally, the seaweed was all over us as we tried swimming. We did not see many people swimming in the ocean. We did see the resort clearing seaweed on Monday before we left but then they grind it up and put it back on the beach. There may be a very good reason for doing it this way. The water was rough and chilly. Red flags were out the entire time we were there. I wonder if this beach is always rough or if it is due to the strong winds and time of year. RESTAURANTS/FOOD-I give the food a 7/10 for most restaurants. Breakfast buffet was good with lots of choices. We only had lunch once during our week stay at the Kitchen Table and it was quite good. I was really wishing they had a casual lunch buffet by the beach. Technically, I guess they do but it is a very small buffet. Sol Bar by the main pool and beach has good made to order pizza. Be aware of dress codes for all restaurants. We saw several people upset because they could not wear a tank top in the breakfast buffet. I was also asked to leave Aroma because I had a swimsuit top on. We loved Aroma coffee shop-lattes, frappes, delicious pastries, sandwiches and fresh juices/fruit available all day. I miss the green juice! My favorite dish of the entire week was the smoked cauliflower at the sports bar of all places. It tasted like an appetizer you would get at a high end restaurant. The ribeye at The Grill was very good. The Hibachi was very good. But in general, food was average for dinner. Reservations are not taken for dinner (except for the Hibachi grill in the Spice restaurant-it is required at this restaurant). It is first come first served but it just didn't really work well as most of the resort wants to eat dinner at the same time. Our most frustrating experience was the Mexican Fiesta night ( thurs). We tried to get on a waitlist and were told that "it was too busy and would be getting busier with the Mayan show." So, we weren't sure what to do as we really wanted to take part. I came back an hour later to put our name on the waitlist and this time it worked. In fact, the hostess (Israel) came and found us in the lobby and escorted us to the table. Still not sure how she found us. However, by the time we were seated at 8:30pm there was very little food left. My husband just grabbed a sandwich from Aroma. We asked about this and the food manager told us that there should have been plenty of food at that time. The entire event felt very unorganized and we left disappointed as we really love Mexican food. However, the food manager did follow up the remainder of our stay and tried her best to make it right. We appreciated that. TRANSFERS-The resort contracts through Seasons Transfers. They were great. No issues whatsoever. Lolo was the best driver ever. ROOMS- Loved the large spacious balcony with the bed. We were in bldg #7 which is close to everything. We thought the rooms were quiet except for the activities that go on until 11pm (shows and music). We didn't mind as we were usually taking part in the nightly activities but this could be an issue for people who want a peaceful evening. We didn't love that the bedroom and bathroom sort of flowed together. If one of us came in after the other was asleep, it was disruptive due to the lack of complete separation of the two rooms. The decor in the rooms is dated and tired. The window treatments look original to the resort. The rooms could definitely use a refresh as well. Room mini bar and fridge are stocked daily. Bottles of water were left each evening during turn down service as well. TOURS- We did the Seasons Catamaran tour to Isla Mujeres. Seasons has an office in the main building at the resort. We loved it. I was surprised at how touristy Isla Mujeres is but Playa Norte (North Beach) is amazing!! Clear, turquoise, calm waters. The island itself was overstimulating but the beach made it worth it. My husband and daughter did the snorkeling but it is highly controlled (everyone stays in line on a rope) and I don't think anyone over age 60 can participate. Seems like a crazy rule but double check if you want to snorkel on that tour and you are over age 60. The highlight of that entire tour was on the way back they stopped the boat for a bit and let us swim. It was amazing! ACTIVITIES- I have never taken part in as many resort activities like I did at this one. I loved the aqua zumba every day at 12 noon. The evening shows were mostly all really fun and entertaining. The activities crew works really hard and they are funny and inclusive and I really enjoyed hanging out with them. I miss the activities crew! In general, there are so many hard working friendly staff members. Not all were friendly, but most were. We did witness a couple of staff confrontations. One at the Sol Bar and another at one of the restaurants. It happens. It was dealt with and staff was quickly replaced but made us wonder if staff is under a great deal of stress. Consider bringing small bills for tipping. Not required but I know it is greatly appreciated. We would probably not return to this resort simply because we are beach people and we were disappointed in the beach. I think we also prefer a little more casual approach to breakfast and lunch. Overall, I do feel it is a solid resort. They are building a new Excellence Coral just down the beach. It looks really beautiful. I think it's supposed to be completed in Feb 2025.

Very relaxing stay, with great service all around. They have a good choice of food options and we had minimal wait times for all the restaurants

My time at Excellence Playa Mujeres

Great Time, after months of research we pulled the trigger on Excellence Playa Mujeres. The staff was wonderful and very friendly and attentive smiling 24/7 and always willing to help. We had an ocean view suite and did excellence club which included a few perks separate pools and beach area and exclusive lounge. The rooms was clean and spacious but a little dated but did the job only issue was with the TV had premium channels and of course most shows were in Spanish and a few English channels not the issue it just wasn’t clear the picture quality was horrible and it wasn’t the tv. When switching to the hotel splash screen with there advertisements was crystal clear and they also provided a chrome cast which you could stream from your phone but if coming from the US or abroad and have to pay extra for data streaming is a bad option for television. The scenery was wonderful, nice beaches little to no seaweed and variety of restaurants I would say 7/10 for food. Would I go again yes if your looking for a party go elsewhere very relaxed and quite resort.

    Nice relaxing Excellence Resort

This will be a kind of long review with the good and bad we experienced. My wife and I have stayed at every Excellence resort there is. Punta Cana, El Carmen, Oyster Bay, and Riviera. At each one, we heard multiple times that Playa was THE best of all. Service, beauty, relaxation etc. So we decided to give it a try. Getting there was smooth, especially immigration and getting our airport transport from the airport, through the hotel. The driver drove like I do, NJ driving, and this was fine. Check in was fine. We are "Diamond" level in the rewards program and requested the double-suite upgrade, which we have never gotten before because it was never available, and this time was no different. They instead offered us a big discount if we upgraded to "Excellence Club". The price was ok, so we said fine, do it. The room they put us in was in Building 7, facing the main building. You can see Prelude (plaza bar) and its pretty close. That night we tried to go to sleep around 10 after a long travel day. There was loud music until 11, fine. However, the noise went until about 12:45am and it sounded like it was literally right outside our balcony door. We could also hear neighbors, "having fun" at 1:30am. Plus every sound in the building seemed amplified and I barely got any sleep. I know that the hotel cant control all behavior, but quiet time at the resort after midnight would be a great idea in my opinion. The next morning I went to the pool and agonized about what to do since I didnt want a week of that again. So I went to the desk, asked for our money back for "excellence club" and to move us to the back of the resort where it would be quite. They did this, great. We went to dinner that night about 6:30ish, and came back around 10p. When we got there, even though "do not disturb" was on the door we had specifically requested no housekeeping service for our entire stay, someone came in and did it anyway. My wife had clothes laid out on bed, and they crumpled them up, and put them on a ledge. We complained to Karla (guest serv mgr) who apologized, and assured us it would not happen again. The next few days were great. Jakeline (hope I got this right, also guest serv mgr) was there at our check in. She spent 2 days trying to find us at the pool area. She also apologized, and for the rest of our stay, came to us at poolside, and made reservations for us anywhere we wanted to go. She even located special ingredients to make a really great Sangria for my wife, and had it ready at the tepanyaki table at Spice. As for a general review, the food, as always was very good. We ate at the Kitchen table (breakfast/lunch), Las Olas, The Grill, Magna, and our favorite, Spice (5 visits including hibachi). The only complaint is that portion sizes seem smaller than other resorts. I dont know if this is company wide, but the baked potato at The Grill was about the size of a small store-bought red potato. At Spice, I got mongolian beef with rice, and there was less than a shot-glass of rice on the plate. I mean two regular spoonfulls of rice. Sushi rolls were about the size of a nickel. Now food is all-inclusive, and even the small portions were very good in terms of taste. I guess I wasnt prepared for it. If you like sushi rolls, order more than you would normally get at home. We also visited Aroma (coffee) every day, multiple times. The drinks were good, but I notice that staff have a hard time making a good cappuccino. Final thoughts: After the first few days I thought "I wont ever come back here again". Jakeline (special shout out) performed service recovery and I changed my opinion to "Would probably come back". We had a very relaxing time and she and the staff were very friendly and did go out of the way to provide good service. Out of all of the Excellence Resorts, I put XPM over El Carmen and Riviara, but under Punta Cana and Oyster Bay. All in all, if you arent sure I would recommend giving it a try.
