My time at Excellence Playa Mujeres

Great Time, after months of research we pulled the trigger on Excellence Playa Mujeres. The staff was wonderful and very friendly and attentive smiling 24/7 and always willing to help. We had an ocean view suite and did excellence club which included a few perks separate pools and beach area and exclusive lounge. The rooms was clean and spacious but a little dated but did the job only issue was with the TV had premium channels and of course most shows were in Spanish and a few English channels not the issue it just wasn’t clear the picture quality was horrible and it wasn’t the tv. When switching to the hotel splash screen with there advertisements was crystal clear and they also provided a chrome cast which you could stream from your phone but if coming from the US or abroad and have to pay extra for data streaming is a bad option for television. The scenery was wonderful, nice beaches little to no seaweed and variety of restaurants I would say 7/10 for food. Would I go again yes if your looking for a party go elsewhere very relaxed and quite resort.

    Nice relaxing Excellence Resort

This will be a kind of long review with the good and bad we experienced. My wife and I have stayed at every Excellence resort there is. Punta Cana, El Carmen, Oyster Bay, and Riviera. At each one, we heard multiple times that Playa was THE best of all. Service, beauty, relaxation etc. So we decided to give it a try. Getting there was smooth, especially immigration and getting our airport transport from the airport, through the hotel. The driver drove like I do, NJ driving, and this was fine. Check in was fine. We are "Diamond" level in the rewards program and requested the double-suite upgrade, which we have never gotten before because it was never available, and this time was no different. They instead offered us a big discount if we upgraded to "Excellence Club". The price was ok, so we said fine, do it. The room they put us in was in Building 7, facing the main building. You can see Prelude (plaza bar) and its pretty close. That night we tried to go to sleep around 10 after a long travel day. There was loud music until 11, fine. However, the noise went until about 12:45am and it sounded like it was literally right outside our balcony door. We could also hear neighbors, "having fun" at 1:30am. Plus every sound in the building seemed amplified and I barely got any sleep. I know that the hotel cant control all behavior, but quiet time at the resort after midnight would be a great idea in my opinion. The next morning I went to the pool and agonized about what to do since I didnt want a week of that again. So I went to the desk, asked for our money back for "excellence club" and to move us to the back of the resort where it would be quite. They did this, great. We went to dinner that night about 6:30ish, and came back around 10p. When we got there, even though "do not disturb" was on the door we had specifically requested no housekeeping service for our entire stay, someone came in and did it anyway. My wife had clothes laid out on bed, and they crumpled them up, and put them on a ledge. We complained to Karla (guest serv mgr) who apologized, and assured us it would not happen again. The next few days were great. Jakeline (hope I got this right, also guest serv mgr) was there at our check in. She spent 2 days trying to find us at the pool area. She also apologized, and for the rest of our stay, came to us at poolside, and made reservations for us anywhere we wanted to go. She even located special ingredients to make a really great Sangria for my wife, and had it ready at the tepanyaki table at Spice. As for a general review, the food, as always was very good. We ate at the Kitchen table (breakfast/lunch), Las Olas, The Grill, Magna, and our favorite, Spice (5 visits including hibachi). The only complaint is that portion sizes seem smaller than other resorts. I dont know if this is company wide, but the baked potato at The Grill was about the size of a small store-bought red potato. At Spice, I got mongolian beef with rice, and there was less than a shot-glass of rice on the plate. I mean two regular spoonfulls of rice. Sushi rolls were about the size of a nickel. Now food is all-inclusive, and even the small portions were very good in terms of taste. I guess I wasnt prepared for it. If you like sushi rolls, order more than you would normally get at home. We also visited Aroma (coffee) every day, multiple times. The drinks were good, but I notice that staff have a hard time making a good cappuccino. Final thoughts: After the first few days I thought "I wont ever come back here again". Jakeline (special shout out) performed service recovery and I changed my opinion to "Would probably come back". We had a very relaxing time and she and the staff were very friendly and did go out of the way to provide good service. Out of all of the Excellence Resorts, I put XPM over El Carmen and Riviara, but under Punta Cana and Oyster Bay. All in all, if you arent sure I would recommend giving it a try.

    40th Anniversary Trip

We spent our 40th Anniversary at the Excellence and as usual, it was an amazing time and we were treated like we were the most important people in the resort. Everyone was so incredibly kind and ensured our every need was taken care of. Fernando went above and beyond for us and I can't say enough of how grateful we are to him. He touch bases with us every day to make sure we felt special and that everything was perfect for us, which it was. He surprised us numerous times by have a special dinner arranged with a beautiful table setting for our anniversary dinner! This was our third time here and each time gets better and while the resort, food, entertainment and amenities are over the top, it's the wonderful people here that make it so incredible and special.

The 5 star club level experience was not 5 star!

Let me preface the review: We have visited about 20 all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean over the last 15 plus years. This includes multiple visits to Le Blanc and Grand Moon Palace, and to Valentin Imperial and Iberostar Grand Palacio all adults hotels. We have traveled extensively in Europe, with many stays at 4 star, and some 5 star, hotels. On the plus side: The food all over the resort ran from very good to excellent, the best we have had at any resort. Landscaping is lovely and well maintained. The beach is broad and wonderfully sandy. Issues however (Note we were Club level, and paid $1500 extra for the week): Restaurants boast about no reservations needed, but this meant long waits in small waiting areas (an hour wait was not unusual). The restaurants did not hand out wireless devices to tell you when the table was ready. Restaurant decor is dated and with little ambiance. Dress codes for men often ignored (long pants, collared shirt). Included wines for club level same as basic level, reds were unpalatable. The added cost wine list was ridiculously highly priced for the listed bottles and vintages. Club level NOT worth it. Club itself is old and drab, lounge is unappealing, and there were no waiters circulating in the evening. There were no waiters circulating in the evening any where in the resort. Club pools felt unheated, club hot tub not hot. Lounge chairs in Club level taken by 8am. They could not be reserved ahead. So what is Club status good for? We had a club suite, with a large patio with plunge pool. There is no shade and the pool was cold. The room was large and clean, but dated. Shower was low flow and water temperature inconsistent. Bathroom lighting was poor, hard to apply makeup. Club level had a one hour access to the spa hydro suite. It felt small and rushed compared to other spas at 5 star all inclusives. No robe, no slippers for Club level in the spa. No slippers in wet hydro area allowed, causing both health and safety concerns. The spa felt like an add on, just so the hotel could advertise as spa all inclusive. An hour hydro spa access was $130 per person per day. The staff resort wide was not as courteous as we were used to as Palace Resort guests. The review is only a 3 star because we thought we paid for a better experience, comparable to past 4 and 5 star experience.
