The Spectacular, the Mediocre and the Disappointing
Like every hotel experience, this was a mixture of experiences. Overall, I would recommend this hotel especially if you like having everything you need in one spot like room service, beautiful grounds, restaurants, spa, etc. There are a lot of things we loved about this place. It was one of the pricier places we stayed at over $400/night. The Disappointing-- lukewarm showers (we were told this was due to solar heating, but we didn't experience this anywhere else) and lukewarm hot springs The Mediocre-- the cocktails and lunch/dinner, location not walkable to anything (can be a plus or minus for you), The Spectacular-- welcome cocktail, the rooms with the hot tub and unparalleled views (especially if the clouds part and Arenal shows itself), the included breakfast (they even packed us breakfast boxes on the mornings we had early tours), the service, the beautiful grounds filled with birds, the free shuttle and entrance to Titoku hot springs (don't drive yourself as there is VERY limited parking) though I would have preferred to just use the hot springs on the property

A lovely hotel that could be great with some attention
There is a lot to recommend this hotel. It’s position which allows all the rooms and the pool a fantastic view of the volcano, the beautiful hot spring pools set in pretty gardens, and the excellent food in the restaurant are all great. The reasons I’ve given it 4 instead of 5 stars is that for a “5” star hotel it’s housekeeping lets it down and we also felt the breakfast was a little below par. E.g one morning the coffee was lukewarm. Our welcome was very warm and helpful, however when we rang reception to ask for a kettle the person who answered had no idea what we were asking for, went off to ask someone but they couldn’t help. When we went to reception the guys understood immediately and one was brought to the room. There were no dressing gowns in the room despite plenty of photos showing people wearing them on the hotel website. We had to phone reception again…..There were minor maintenance issues - e.g cracked wash hand basin and broken toilet roll holder. Not what you expect from a 5 star hotel. The pool is freezing! Perhaps siphoning off some of the hot spring water would make it more appealing. Finally the lighting in our room was so dismal we had to use torches when looking in suitcases! We enjoyed our stay here and on balance would stay again as the views and the grounds are great. But they need to up their game on the housekeeping and update the rooms.

Volcano in your back yard!!
When you wake up in the morning to the volcano, it is absolute magic! I haven’t felt that enchanted since I was a child, waking up to surprise snow on Christmas morning. The grounds are beautiful. So many birds all around. The staff are all so friendly and attentive. The hot pools are beautiful and a perfect temperature- not too hot, so we could relax for an hour with friends. This is the best hotel in the area! The view of the volcano is unmatched, and the proximity to La Fortuna is perfect- far enough away from the crowds, but close enough that we were able to go in everyday for lunches and dinners.

Disappointment in many ways
Perhaps we just had bad luck, but the five-star-facility Arenal Kioro came across as a two-star disappointment on our visit. Our first room had no hot water. They said there was a problem and it would be restored by 9 p.m. By 10 p.m., it wasn’t, but it was too late to change rooms. The next morning, when we switched rooms, the second room also (!) didn’t have hot water. In the second room, it was lukewarm at best. Service was mediocre, except for Leonardo at the front desk, who was extremely helpful. Volcano views were supposed to be great, but they were blocked by the weather. (Not the hotel’s fault.) Restaurant: Adequate. Bottom line: Find a different place to stay.

Amazingly experience
We stated for 3 nights on our first leg of our 2 week Costa Rica trip. I cannot say enough about the entire staff at this hotel. Everyone goes out of their way to ensure you are being taking care of. The food was excellent, the location speaks for itself. If you want to treat yourself to something nice, this hotel is the place to stay.
