Red rock canyon state park with a tent

This is a great spot for a quick get away from Los Angeles. It’s only an hour and a half away and Ricardo campground has a very cool, low key vibe and at least when we visited. The campers were very chilled out. It may be different in summertime. It’s first come first serve on securing campsites, and as we were there in late February we easily found a spot. As the temp was in the high 50s, it was a bit chilly for us as we are heat seekers, but still very comfortable. We’re gonna take this opportunity to promote our Winterial 3 person tent. This tent sets up super easy, it take us about 5 minutes if we’re movong slow. And it’s so lightweight you can carry it easily if backpacking. We love it.

    Beautiful state park

Having left Death Valley behind we were looking for a park to hike in on our way back to Los Angeles. Red Rock Canyon looked like a good choice. Unfortunately the morning we arrived it was raining and was pretty dismal. We stopped in the small visitor center and talked to the attendant about hikes. We followed her suggestions and set out despite the weather and are glad we did. The rock formations are spectacular. About noon we had a break in the clouds and got some shine and the rocks became even more striking. We followed the marked trails only because we had limited time but would love to come back when we could explore more. Highly recommend. We didn't camp but the campground looked nice. Well maintained.

    Ricardo Campground Pleasant Surprise

Red Rock Canyon State Park and Ricardo Campground. We left Kingman Arizona and were headed for Modesto CA to visit relatives and wondered were we could stay somewhere in between. After traveling road weary and ugly I-40 this campground was a very pleasant surprise. Did a little one mile hike, had a campfire with a great quiet star filled night against some interesting rock formations. May 14th, 2017. They even have a visitor center.

    Beautiful Place!

This place makes wonderful photos. Some of the rock formations look like people, mushrooms, tables, sandwiches, it's like a mini, closer by version of places in Arizona and Utah. We just stopped here as part of a day trip that also included the Rosamond cat zoo. Go on the trail near the highway it's well worth it and an easy walk. Not far from there is Randsburg which has flusher (and is cool to look at too). Camping looks pretty neat if you're self contained if I were going I would go now (spring) before it gets too hot.

    Great camping Location

This campground is beautiful, the rocks and formations around are just picture perfect. Kids had a blast climbing them and exploring all the nature around, beautiful nature trails and the Ranger at base camp is knowledgeable and helpful, you can even buy firewood ($8.00) if you forgot to bring some! During the day weather was perfect but at night it got really cold so bring a jacket. Also hopefully your neighbors won't be talking and having a good time until late in the night or you may need earplugs... Quick getaway from LA totally worth it! No need 4x4, also bathrooms and water provided!
