Hard Pass on the Hyatt Zilara Montego Bay

It pains me to write this review, but I am so disappointed in this property that I feel like I have to. My family and I stayed here in 2021 during Covid, and we really enjoyed it. Despite them having to work with a light staff, they made everything work. Last summer and fall, we decided to go back with some additional family and my wife and I were embarrassed. We stayed at the property between January 4th and 12th, 2025. (I was tempted to give this review a "terrible", but my family and I still managed to have fun because of each other's company...) Hotel management is clearly not keeping up with regular maintenance, and cutting costs left and right via trimming what people should expect in an "all inclusive property". I've summarized these into different areas below: Dining/Bars: The dining is mediocre at best, with one exception being the Italian restaurant. (and a waitress named Shauna-Kaye XXXXX, who was wonderful) Every restaurant had limited availability of both times and menu items, including the coffee shops, which ran out of multiple items during the week. Want a ham and cheese croissant? "We're out" Butter for a croissant? "No. No butter ". The ala carte sushi they used to have at the Asian restaurant during our last trip? Not any more. Now you get a mixed dish of three pieces of Maki as a course. (Maki are the rice wrapped ones that usually come with 8 pieces to an order when you go to a sushi restaurant) The portions are mostly small, which is tolerable, but to be out of so many menu items so consistently across the board is unacceptable. The bar staff who remembered our names during the last trip had become somewhat surly and nowhere near as accommodating as our last trip. They have moved most of the really desirable dishes to become insanely expensive. (eg... a bone in Ribeye for about $150... Think New York Steakhouse pricing on top of what you thought was all inclusive) Health Club: SHOULD be great, because a few years back they invested in some really good equipment. However, they've failed to maintain the equipment. It is great to have 12 treadmills, but if half of them are broken it is a problem. It is hard to use a rowing machine when the straps that hold your feet in are broken, and the same can be said with the exercise bikes. Warm water bottles; no fridge to provide cold water in a gym. (for a fraction of the price of some of the gym equipment) No attendant any of the times we went. Entertainment/Activities: The Steel Drum band was the highlight. They are well worth seeing. Most of the other shows are brief and not super appealing. The yoga class and "paint and sip" events are notable exceptions. Rooms/Service/ Facilities: The rooms and public facilities are in need of repair/renewal. They used to have a great "personal butler" service that allowed you to text or WhatsApp your person, which has been stopped. Now if you want something brought to your room, there is a $10 fee for every delivery. No Fans in bathrooms or toilets. In case you feel like a "4 or 5 star hotel" should actually have hot water available... you're in for a disappointment. (think perhaps management should add a bit more water heating capacity?) In every common restroom, at least 1 sink was non-functional... in several case 2 of three were broken. Many of the actual toilets were not kept sanitary, including in the spa facility where there was only one toilet available. It looked like something you would see at Penn Station. I am a long term World of Hyatt member, since WAY before they called it that. (1989, when it was called Hyatt Gold Passport) I have stayed in many of their hotels around the world and used to use them almost exclusively when traveling to London over a three year period, but they have completely dropped the ball on this property. I don't know whether it is the management company that runs this property, but it felt to me that they are setting this company up to be closed for renovations, or just sold. Not a happy customer by any stretch, and particularly pissed off because I don't get to travel that much with my extended family, and I feel like my recommendation to them was misguided. We will not be back.

    Solid 3 Just ok - 5 for Service - 4.5 Pool/Beach - 2 for food - 4 for clean outdated rooms

Simply put outstanding service, great pool & beach, clean & nice rooms do not overcome below average food and a far below average food service practices. Almost all the food is cooked in a central kitchen and held warm in the same holding ovens from the outdoor Jerk Grill to the "French" restaurant. Food preparation by servers using their bare hands and we never saw a thermometer to check the food holding temperature's... Breakfast cooked to order omelets save breakfast. Lunch at the "WestWind" by the pool was solid. EVERY dinner was poor to bad. The named Italian and French restaurants are just that in name only. Two bone pork chop was a pork steak with 70% fat, the fillet in the surf and turf was sirloin and on and on... Fresh fruits were scarce, never saw a lemon, lime, or orange over 8 days. Service and facilities are solid but can not overcome the food. For the price there are better options in Jamaica.

Average Resort, not 5-Star Adults Only

Pretty average resort. It’s clean and nice but could definitely use updating. The fact that it’s very spread out means no one area is over crowded, which is nice. Not really an adults only resort though as the restaurants, and most amenities are shared with the Ziva which is on the same property. Was annoyed to have paid more for Zilara when it’s the same resort as Ziva with no separation. Food was not great, and fairly limited. Almost no fresh fruit or vegetables. Restaurant booking is pretty annoying and fills up fast. Beach is man-made which was a bit disappointing, as it’s small and not natural feeling. Lastly, the staff were very hit or miss. Some very friendly but more often than not they acted like they were annoyed you were there.

Great Stay, no issues at all!

Very nice resort! Room was spacious and clean. Both pool bars were fairly quiet and had friendly bartenders who were attentive. Only went to the buffet twice (once each for breakfast and dinner) and it was standard fare and nothing special. The a la cart restaurants were very good 4 course meals. We had a group of 12 and made reservations for the entire week when we arrived. The service was top notch everywhere we ate and appreciated being tipped. The buildings could use a little maintenance on the outside but overall the grounds were beautiful and clean. Pro tip - bring water shoes if you plan on going in the Caribbean, the bottom is very rocky! I have seen a lot of negative reviews but for the price I was very satisfied with everything about the resort.

Don’t listen to all the negative reviews

After reading all the negative reviews I was very skeptical after booking this resort. But to my surprise it was a wonderful fun filled experience. I was with a party of 12. We made our dinner reservations right when we arrived with no problem and they were very accommodating with our large group. We stayed on the Zilara side in an Oceanfront luxury suite. The room was large and had everything we needed. Yes the beach is rocky but gorgeous Yes the pools are colder in the winter but tolerable The staff is wonderful. Everyone we came in contact with was so friendly and professional The food was great. I will say the buffet was just average. But there are so many other options and if you can’t find something you like. Then you are the problem People love to complain and nitpick every detail of the resort. I was fearful but I was pleasantly surprised on how nice this resort was. This was our third trip to Jamaica. We have traveled to Mexico and Punta Cana and yes I’ve been to more luxurious resorts and I’ve also been to less. We had a great trip. Would I return? The answer is yes
