A Nightmare Stay: Why Lifestyle Tropical Resort in Puerto Plata Is Anything But Luxury

We stayed at the Lifestyle Tropical Resort in Puerto Plata from November 7th to 15th, 2024, and this was, without a doubt, the worst resort experience we’ve ever had. Even 3-star resorts have been far superior. Here’s our detailed account of the stay: Arrival Experience The resort arranged for a reckless driver to pick us up. The ride was terrifying, with the driver repeatedly mentioning a recent 15-car pileup on the same road. This only heightened our anxiety about our family’s safety. While I typically wouldn’t judge a resort based on a driver, this experience set a terrible tone. After a 2.5-hour harrowing ride, we arrived at the resort exhausted. Check-in took place in a makeshift outdoor area, and the process was rushed with no explanation of the facilities. We received red bracelets and were assigned a third-floor room despite traveling with a wheelchair and stroller. There were no elevators, making the room inaccessible. We hoped to resolve this issue the next day. Day 1: Room Issues and Aggressive Sales Tactics The room was cramped, with only two beds and no seating with back support. The bathroom smelled like sewage, and the shower was dirty. The concierge dismissed our concerns, insisting all rooms booked through RCI were identical. This was untrue, as we later met other guests who had received larger rooms. Early the next morning, a staff member named Leo bombarded us with calls and knocks, pressuring us to attend a "tour" and promising a better room. Exhausted, we finally gave in, only to endure a terrifying golf cart ride with no proper safety measures. The "tour" turned out to be an aggressive sales pitch for a timeshare, showcasing areas of the resort we weren’t allowed to access. No room upgrade was provided afterward. Ongoing Issues We found large spiders in our room on two occasions, and I suspect my son was bitten. The bathroom continued to smell of sewage despite cleaning attempts. The air conditioning barely worked, our phone was broken for two days, and the fridge was not restocked. The Wi-Fi was expensive ($15 per device per day) but rarely worked due to frequent power outages. Dining Experience The food was consistently stale, bland, and poorly prepared. Most dishes seemed reheated or improperly seasoned. Even simple items like French toast and pancakes were inedible. Despite paying for all-inclusive, we were restricted from most restaurants and amenities unless we purchased a membership. The only decent meals were at the Blue Lagoon and a Chinese restaurant, which required difficult-to-obtain reservations. Bartenders were unskilled, and drinks were either overly strong or poorly mixed. Environment and Layout The resort’s layout was poorly designed, with steep, uneven paths and open drainage channels that were difficult to navigate, especially with a wheelchair. There was no rain cover between buildings, and the roads became hazardous during frequent downpours. The beach was unusable due to dangerous waves. Customer Service Issues We tried contacting RCI to report the numerous issues and request a refund, only to be told that it was not possible because we were using a guest certificate instead of being the RCI owner. This left us feeling completely trapped in an unacceptable situation. Departure After seven days of poor service, aggressive sales tactics, and unfulfilled promises, we decided to leave early. We found a much better resort in Punta Cana, despite the additional expense and a 5-hour drive. Summary of Key Issues Cramped, poorly maintained rooms with sewage-smelling bathrooms. Aggressive timeshare sales disguised as "tours."Poor-quality food and limited access to amenities. Frequent power and internet outages. Lack of accessibility for families or those with mobility issues. Overall lack of hospitality and concern for guest satisfaction. Final Thoughts This resort is not a 4-star establishment by any standard. It feels like a scam designed to upsell memberships while providing the bare minimum to regular guests. Whatever you do, avoid Lifestyle Tropical Resort in Puerto Plata. Save yourself the frustration, and choose a resort that values its guests.
