    Chilling in Cozumel

We really enjoyed the food and the staff. The snorkeling, beach, pools were excellent. The only complaint would be there are no balconies and little outdoor sitting areas for pre dinner or after dinner socializing and drinks. Otherwise a great relaxing experience.

    Never again

This property is boring with not much to do. Food is just OK. Front desk staff is terrible. I have stayed at Barcelo properties before I will not stay at this one again. There are better resorts in Cozumel

    Another wonderful stay at Occidental

I stayed Royal level with 7 other diver friends. The food alone at Royal is well worth the extra cost. We were treated so well. Looking forward to returning soon. The grounds look even better than they did in the past. They really take great care of the property.

    Disappointing, but enjoyable

We were a little disappointed in various aspects of our stay. But overall, our stay was enjoyable. Room service and any excursions were an upcharge. The grounds were beautiful.

    Wonderful Vacation!

My spouse and I just returned from our vacation at the Occidental, Cozumel. Overall, we had an amazing time and really enjoyed our stay. The staff are very friendly, and the resort/rooms are very clean and appealing. One of the big reasons we chose this resort, is because we are scuba divers, and this resort offers diving right from the resort. We did learn however though that there are better prices for diving elsewhere, so I would recommend you shop around to get better prices. There are a lot of fees associated with this dive shop - marine fees on every dive, $41 US for equipment rental per day you dive, and if you night dive you have to rent flashlights/blinkers on top of everything else which is fairly costly. The diving was however amazing, we were able to see so many different sea creatures and the reefs are so bright and colourful compared to other places we've been. The dive instructors for the most part were great, and very knowledgeable. Our favourite was definitely Thomas, we highly encourage you to dive with him if you get the chance. The night dive was also amazing, we got to see several octopus, squid, nurse sharks, and so much more - I would highly recommend doing this while you're there! The snorkelling off the resort isn't great, which we were slightly disappointed about. We did however get to see some sea creatures, but there are no reefs at all right off the beach. There are also tons of boats in the Ocean, so you really have to stay within the buoys which limits what you are able to discover. There are however sting rays, nurse sharks, huge lobsters and lots of different fish you can see in this area. One of the days we were there, the Ocean was closed because of the weather, so we decided to rent a moped and tour the island. I would highly recommend doing this! You can tour the whole island in approx 1.5 hours and there is so much to see. We were able to see Mayan ruins, several little shops and beaches along the way - watch out for all the crocodiles along the way! This was one of the coolest parts of our trip - seeing the crocs in the wild was so amazing. There is also a tour you can do in a lagoon where they bring you around on a boat and educate on crocodiles. We really enjoyed this. On our second last day, we decided to do the "El Cielo" snorkelling tour, which brings you to three different snorkelling sites. This excursion was amazing! We highly recommend it. Our guide Ricardo (through Alberto's Beach Bar) was great, and the snorkelling locations were stunning. The third area was a sandy location with SO MANY starfish! It was incredible, there were hundreds. At the end of the excursion, they bring you to a little beach where you can enjoy a snack and some drinks. What we didn't know was that there was going to be several massive stingrays at this location, is was incredible. I would highly recommend doing this excursion if you like snorkelling! Another huge highlight of this resort/vacation was the jungle feel of it, and the wildlife you are able to see. Our first night, we saw several little pigs running around the resort - we later learned these are called peccaries. The resort also has several Coati's or Coatimundi's walking around. They're absolutely adorable! They also have several large lizards/iguana's, and lots of beautiful birds around the resort. One tip I can offer, is do not agree to anything to do with the timeshares. As soon as we got off the plane went to exit the airport, a woman with an occidental lanyard came to get us and brought us to a podium where a man showed us a map of the island and where we could see different landmarks. Unfortunately, we agreed to a large discount on our snorkelling excursion in order to "view a presentation". We ended up getting roped into a sales pitch that took up half of our first day. Lesson learned! There also appear to be a lot of hidden fees with excursions and different tours you decide to take - I highly recommend clarifying exactly what costs are beforehand. We ended up having to pay different little fees everywhere we went, which ended up being very costly. There are also dock fees you have to pay anytime a boat picks you up at the pier - I believe it ranged from $7 - $9 per person depending on the day. We managed to escape this fee once by having the boat pick us up in the ocean and not touching the dock - I recommend this if you're looking to save some money. The night life is not the greatest - this is a family friendly resort, however there were barely any kids present. The first bit of the entertainment is geared towards the children, and then the rest for the adults. We weren't overly impressed with the entertainment, but this wasn't a huge deal for us. One night they did Casino night which was really cool. They also had a mariachi band, live music, name that song, and other activities. All of this being said, I would go back to this resort in a heartbeat. I feel that I will be more prepared the next time and the experience will be that much better.
