A great stay in Nuevo Vallarta
This was our first visit to Nuevo Vallarta, and we were very fortunate to have chosen Occidental Nuevo Vallarta as our first stay. It was such an enjoyable experience, on every level, that we will definitely be coming back.

Excellent resort, will likely return!
Location is 20 mins from airport. Great resort with good food. Weather did not disappoint. Very friendly staff. We stayed in first club, rooms were great.Market right across the street. Super long beach to walk

Great vacation
This was our second stay at Occidental, and will not be our last. We love this resort. It is smaller and very easy to get around. It was easy to meet people and get to visit with them daily. The entertainment crew by the pool were good and fun to interact with. Activities and shows are posted on the board daily. Bartenders and waiters by pool were fun and very attentive. Remembered our drinks! The pool area was very clean. Sometimes the music was a little loud so hard to talk. All the wait staff in the restaurants were amazing. We only dined at the Italian and Japanese restaurants. Food was delicious. Good variety and sometimes hard to decide as many good choices. I loved the risotto in the Italian! Buffets were good and seemed to change up a bit daily for lunch and dinner. Loved the omelet station in the mornings. Loved the beach for walking especially in the afternoons when the tide was out. The shows at night were very good and fun to sit outside and enjoy the evening. The rooms were a great size. We did book a balcony room and nice to be able to open the door and sit outside. The housekeeping staff great. Our room was always perfect when we got back from our day at the pool and beach! And Minibar stocked daily. We did not venture off the property. Heard there was a farmers’ market on Tuesdays and a mall within walking distance. We were just content to relax and enjoy the resort and the sun. We did all of our shopping at the hut in front of the Royal club pool (most people do not notice this hut since it is behind the hedge). Javier in the back corner was great to work with. If he did not have color or size you wanted – he would work on getting what you wanted. All beach vendors were very polite.

Overall good experience, just needs a bit of atte tion
Pros : love the size, not to big and spread out. You will quickly get your bearings where everything is and getting to the beach from any room will only take minutes. The beach is beautiful to walk on, best at low tide and very clean. Food was good at the a la cartes and buffet. Loungers were all good, looked new, clean, none broken and plenty for everyone. There is a farmers market across the street on Tuesday, better than expected. The animation team work very had to make it a fun experience. Cons: Some of the staff were very unhelpful. We had an issue with booking for the a la Cartes. Our receipts had one day and the lists were reversed. By the time we figured it out our table at Tokyo had been given away, and we were not supposed to be there that night. When we took the matter to the concierge, before we even had a chance to tell her the issue she through up her hands and said “nothing I can do”. You only get 3 a la cartes and we were not offered a replacement. Fortunately the manager at the Italian restaurant did see it was not our fault and gave us a table on another night. The other con was our room. DO NOT ACCEPT ROOM 346. I’m guessing it was supposed to be an upgrade cause it was kind of the few rooms with a balcony but it was directly above Tokyo restaurant and the trees completely covered it, no view except plants. The other issue with this room is that it has a connecting door to the next room and there is no sound proof of any kind. I could hear whole conversations of our neighbours when they were only talking in a normal tone, and i’m sure they heard us as well. Last issue was the lobby lounge. They really need to update, fix and replace the furniture. Very outdated chairs with many that are broken. Also need more tables and chairs. This place was overcrowded before and after dinner. I would go back if the price was good. The pics will show the view from our balcony.

Nice resort, great service - could use some upgrades
Overall we enjoyed our stay. The food was excellent. Service was good to great. The resort didn't feel too crowded and we enjoyed the variety of restaurants and food options, especially with royal club privileges being able to make unlimited dinner reservations. Our favorite restaurant was the Italian. We also really enjoyed the sushi restaurant (both the restaurant and teppanyaki). The Mexican restaurant was a bit disappointing. The food seemed more geared towards tourists than authentic Mexican, however, the sunset view and outdoor atmosphere was lovely. The Royal Level restaurant has a beautiful view of the sunset, but the food and service was just OK. For lunch we enjoyed the outdoor snack bar/buffet and preferred it over the regular buffet. The breakfast buffet was good, but not great. We thought the resort could improve in a few areas to make for a 5 star experience. Restaurant reservations had to be done through the concierge, which meant waiting for almost an hour on the Sunday when reservations open for the week. Most resorts we've been to recently have switched to online reservations which makes things so much easier. The resort is also showing it's age. We had to change rooms because our window wouldn't close properly and the level of noise coming through was too much. The new room had an issue with the AC fan being quite loud. They did send someone to fix it, and it was fixed for a few hours before it went back to rattling loudly. We didn't want to change rooms a 2nd time so we just dealt with it. We also noticed a fair amount of plastic garbage and cigarette butts in the sand around the Bali beds and in front of the resort. Cleaning this up would make a big impact. Finally, if you are someone who enjoys to sit on your balcony at the end of the day, be forewarned that the majority of rooms do not have balconies! We didn't do our research on this and were a bit disappointed, though this was our own fault. To book a room with a balcony, it is more expensive, but some are available. We enjoyed the amenities of booking a Royal Level room. We really enjoy a la carte dinners, so the unlimited restaurant reservations made it very worth it for us. We also really enjoyed using the Bali beds on the beach. If these are amenities you can go without, then you probably don't need to book Royal. We enjoyed our stay, but the resort didn't stand out in any particular way good or bad. I don't think it will be on our return again list (though very few resorts are on that list as we like to try new places!). We would recommend it as a good option for the area if the price is right.
