Amazing staff
Occidental Tamarindo is a smaller resort, the rooms a little older and the A/C drips because of the humidity BUT that being said the staff is amazing. The staff is always willing to help. Thanks to Marco Barrantes, Charlotte Ulloa, Geisel Villagra, Kerlin Gómez, Gloriana Ramirez, Silvia Gómez in the front desk, you're all wonderful. Thanks to Senorita Karen of the Entertainment department, your shows and your personality at the pool are amazing. Although our Vacation was rainy due to Caribbean storms, the overall experience was amazing.

Don't waste your money. 3 * at 'best'!
Not good!! I have never written a review before but felt the need to let people know. It isn't one major issue but 'alot' of smaller ones. Cloth chairs in the dining room are filthy. Hand sanitation machines are broken. Public bathrooms out of soap. The poolside snack bar provides shrivelled up hotdogs every day. The food at the buffet is cold; even if you're first in line. The tabled are set uniformally; some have napkins, some have coffee cups, some have salt etc. Poolside lounge chairs are broken and moldy. The grout on the floor in our bathroom is black and moldy. It is not 'service' driven; no one poolside getting drink, have to search for someone to get water in dining room. The only good thing I can say is that the staff are nice.

Was good overall
The staff and location were great . The facility itself is a bit run down and could use some maintenance. We enjoyed the beach although kind of rocky in parts but nice sand to the south. Food was good at buffet but a bit repetitive. Our room was ok , generally clean but in need of some upkeep like rest of the resort . The staff were mostly friendly with good service. Good food at the a la carts , had a great time at the hibachi table in the Japanese restaurant. Overall if your expectations are a 5 star it may have been years ago but it’s a 3 1/2 star at best in my opinion.

Do not stay here
The food is absolutely horrendous, drinks are terrible as well. The beach while beautiful is unswimable, lava rock everywhere and very windy and full of aggressive waves. Great for surfing but not for swimming. Rooms are ok, beds are extremely uncomfortable, the shower floods every time you use it. The resort is clean and well Maintained, staff has been great. The country is beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed all of our excursions and exploring off the resort, we will definitely return to Costa Rica just not to this resort.

Great place !
We have visited the Occidental in Tamarindo many times. It’s a great place to call home base when exploring and surfing many great spots that are close by. The staff is always very pleasant This is a great place for couples or for the entire family.
