Not horrible but if you’re picky - keep looking
Friendly however very inconsistent staff. Security was a right pain in the @$$ as a smoker. It would be nice to have been offered a space to enjoy a smoke. We had to walk to the beach in the dark, uneven ground that had poisonous snakes but they didn’t care. Clean resort.

It’s a nice place.
I just spent 5 nights here at the Occidental in Tamarindo. This large hotel is maintained very well, poolside and common areas comfortable and tidy. Our room was well appointed, clean and quiet. We enjoyed the low key vibe as an end to our Costa Rica travels. I would recommend this resort.

Beautiful Costa Rica, lush rain forests and lots of Monkeys!
We rented a vacation home for the whole family through Marriott Bonvoy for 8 days. Excellent choice. RPM Vacations took care of the property. They were quick to respond when we had issues. Thank you for the great service. We had tons of room for everyone, a private pool, Kitchen, BBQ, washer and dryer. We were actually located in Playa Lagosta. Magnificent sunsets, lots of animals, birds. The beach was wonderful, lots of tide pools during low tide, and lots of surf for those that enjoy it. Lots of restaurants all along the beach for a quick bite. We saw plenty of monkeys in this area as they are close to the food. You can basically walk everywhere and use the car when we needed groceries. You can rent golf carts to get around the town which would have been a good idea. Food at the grocery store is similar to prices in Canada. We were expecting to pay less. That was the downside of our vacation.

Very nice stay in Tamarindo
We enjoyed our stay at the Occidental Tamarindo, one of three hotels during our time in Costa Rica. The property is on the older side, but the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, and the grounds are lovely. The staff was all very friendly and helpful. I had a lovely, relaxing body scrub and massage in their beautiful spa. The choices on the buffets were good; breakfast was a highlight, as was when they had grilled chicken available. We really enjoyed having a cocktail and relaxing in a lounge chair in the shade of the trees on the beach, and looking out over the beautiful ocean.

Clean, good food, needs more staff and upgrades to rooms.
Hotel offers a decent experience but is seriously understaffed which manifests with poor service in several areas. In the evenings there is one bartender and one bar open on the entire resort. The bartender is overworked and was at times short with customers. The expectations put upon one person were extremely trying. There are not enough staff clearing plates and offering service in the dining area, the grounds crew worked hard and long hours but again far too much to expect from one person on a resort this size. Outdoor common areas are undergoing upgrades and were very nice, however, time to upgrade the outdoor furniture as the chaises are in poor repair, sagging and stained. Entertainment staff during the day were busy and engaging but did not bother or pressure people to participate as happens on other resorts. The rooms…….need huge overhaul! Little issues like the silvering in mirrors are disintegrating, scarred wood on nightlights, also they are scraped or have paint spills on them. We have to turn the lights off by turning the bulbs as the switch is broken. We have had stained bedspreads, inconsistent towel, bar refill. Again, not enough staff! As a side note, the room “bar” equates to two canned beers, water bottles and a few pop daily. The food at the buffet was very good. Lots of variety and it was kept refreshed often. The evening hours are not great for families as they do not open until 7pm. The “snack bar” does not change much day to day and the food there sits for many hours. Overall the resort is quiet, it’s clean and safe. Some upgrades are definitely needed and more staff would make it a more pleasant experience for everyone.
