THIRD VISIT – PLEASED WE RETURNED

This was our third visit to this hotel and it was still as good. We stayed over Christmas and New Year 2024/25 and arrived on 23rd December 2024, flying with TUI from Manchester. Good flight, crew were great, friendly, efficient and professional but, unfortunately, had a sad and tragic event to deal with near the end of the flight, which involved a diversion from the original flight plan, resulting in a delay of around 4 hours on checking into hotel. Not a good start to our holiday, however, following this unfortunate start, we had a great holiday. Reception was great, especially David, who went out of his way to be helpful and contributed very much to our holiday enjoyment. We booked a junior suite with pool view, which was large with a spacious sitting area, very large bed, walk in shower and double sinks. The balcony was a good size with two chairs and a table with a great panoramic sea view, there is also a double towel rail on the wall for hanging any washing or wet towels, we enjoyed late afternoon drinks out there admiring the view. As in all the other rooms, there are optics included with Gordons’s Gin, Smirnoff Vodka, Dominican Superior Rum and Whisky (sorry can’t remember the brand name) and a fridge containing mixers, soft drinks and water which is refilled each day along with any empty spirit bottles. Pools large with floating beds, not too cold! Lots of sunbeds around the pools but unfortunately, some guests still reserve ‘their place’ each day whether or not they actually use them, one couple reserving 4 loungers, 2 tables and somehow managed to get 8 towels!! The management do ask guests not to reserve these and state that towels, etc., will be removed but this never happened during our visit. However, apart from one day, we were always able to find a lounger. Restaurants are the same as most RIU hotels: Asian, Italian, Steak House and Krystal – all very good but Krystal was really good, especially the short rib Bourguignon. House red was good also the sparkling wine, didn’t try the white or rose. Cocktails were good (much improved in the main bar since last year!) also in the bar between the Italian and the Steak House, however, this bar was always extremely busy as most people called there before a meal in the three specialty restaurants in that area and, as there was only one barman, who had to give priority to the restaurant waiters, there was always a long wait for a drink, despite him working at full steam to fulfil the orders! Obviously need an additional barman in this bar. Entertainment was good, improved from last year, although now they have moved this area to a larger and partly uncovered area, it is not practical when it rains, which it did on a couple of occasions during our stay. Perhaps some kind of covering in this area would be a good idea, something along the lines of the lounger shading around the pool which can be opened or closed as necessary could be installed? Our return flight was delayed but we were able to stay in the hotel and enjoy the facilities until our later pick-up time, much better than being stuck in the airport. Unfortunately, we had further delays within the airport of around 2 hours! Despite the flight problems, we had a great holiday and we will return to this hotel.

    Underwhelming

I rarely write reviews, but depend on them quite a bit so I decided to write one about the RIU Macao. We went with 2 families and had a great time. The weather was fantastic and the drinks were always flowing. I will say though, after staying at several other all inclusives, it wasn't the best. We do not expect Michelin star restaurants and are not real foodies so our food expectations are not extremely high, but I really didn't think the food was very good. Buffet food was generally cold, most meals we ate at the restaurants were underwhelming with the exception of the Short rib at Krystal, that was amazing. After reading all of the other reviews I am surprised to hear that they thought the staff was friendly. We found the opposite. They got the job done, but no smiles/ not engaging at all- we usually connect with wait staff/bartenders at these places- we are a fun big group :) but not so much here. The last little thing that I found annoying after paying thousands of dollars to stay here was when I left my room key in my room and went to the front desk to ask for another they threatened if it happened again they would charge me $20?? I have never stayed in a hotel that charged for additional keys. It was generally a clean resort- always saw staff cleaning the bathrooms, but the sports bar smelled like mildew towels (it was weird because we went to the sports bar at the Bavaro and that had the same smell but even worse) and the picture below was the entrance to our rooms -looked like this the whole week. There was a used dental flosser there the whole week. We did the elite club- not sure if it was worth it. I thought it said you got early check in but our kids room that were not elite were actually ready before ours, but I really did enjoy the elite cabanas on the beach. Overall, there are so many options for all inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, if we return we will definitely try another.

    Christmas hols

We travelled out Christmas Eve , had been to this hotel in July 2019 , arrived at hotel and was greeted with a chilled drink , we checked in online so fairly easy check in , we booked to stay for 10 nights over Christmas period, we weren’t happy with the room so complained at reception and was given room up grade , the room was fine , nice quiet part of hotel , nice easy walk in morning to sports bar for coffee before breakfast started, room no. 1004 , the food at this hotel is fantastic, the buffet will supply anything you need , at night there’s the specialists restaurants , no reservations needed just turn up , we loved the Italian, but went to all 3 restaurants, everything is on the riu app, opening times , events , day time activities everything, you can not fault this hotel , the staff are amazing from the restaurants to bar staff , animation team , big thank you to pablo our main man at the bar who looked after us so well , like I said this was our second visit to this hotel and it just gets better , there’s so much to do here it won’t disappoint, until the next time riu palace Macao thank you
