WORST Riu. Spend your money elsewhere.
The only positive thing, is that the rooms are clean (which should be a basic standard) however AC doesn’t work great and had to call someone 3 times to fix it and to get our fan to work. We have stayed at the Riu Palace over 20 times. This resort is not a traditional Riu. This is more of a “hotel” than a resort. First, Not on the beach. Not even close. Not enough shuttles. Secondly, The service is horrible all the way around. Not accommodating, helpful, or considerate. No beach service like the other Riu, but they advertise you get the other Riu accommodations. Little instruction on how to get to the beach or to bring towels. Third, the activities are sub par and restaurants (at best). Spend $200 more and stay at a Riu palace…. Or any other Riu.

Review
Overall the hotel was very good. I had family come from Bacalar, Mexico to visit for the day. I asked about visiters 2 days previously. I was told it would be 800 pesos each for the entire day. Nothing else was said except that it was from 7am-11 pm. When my brother and his spouse showed up on the Friday, we were told they couldn't stay on Fridays. I was not told this previously. The staff was not accomodating at all. They got a ride all that way to be turned away. After arguing with the staff that this was the fault of the RIU staff not ours, I believed my guests should have been allowed to stay. We were then told that if they wanted to pay 3000 pesos each they could stay. Why is it ok for them to stay at that price and not the price I was told. It would have made no difference in the occupancy of the resort. It was a money grab and that is it. If I was told Fridays were not allowed they would not have come on that day. I feel there should be compensation for them for the travel costs, stress, ignorance, etc. Also, the food in the restaurants are normally better than the buffet but I found the opposite at this resort.

Nice
Enjoyed our stay. Buffet and restaurants excellent. Extremely hard working staff. Some noisy “youngsters” around late at night….

Riu Tequila 17/03 - 24/03
Just returned from a fab week at the Riu Tequila and had a great time. All the staff were super friendly and couldn't do more for you. ROOMS Rooms weren't mindblowing but to be honest we didn't spend much time in them apart from to sleep in so no complaints at all. Nice touch with the optics in the room. Beds comfy! Yes as many have said the shower doesn't offer much privacy (was sharing with a friend) but we found a well placed towel over the rail on the outside of the door worked a treat to hide anything from the waist down. Corridors can be a little noisy and the doors slam rather loudly but it's only people going to and from their rooms so it's not constant. FOOD/BARS Ate in the main restaurant the majority of the time and there was a always a great selection. Particularly loved the fish and the mexican options. Not usually a breakfast boy on holiday but there was such a good choice available, if I could've just had a bowl of the baked beans I would've! Only went to the steak a la carte of the three choices (Black Cow) and can't fault it. The no reservation system worked really well - you just get given a buzzer when your table's ready and we only had to wait around 15 minutes or so - gives you time to go and have a quick drink at the bar beforehand! Only complaint was that there was a real lack of drinks menu's particularly at the main bar (there was only 1), so make sure you know what you want when you go up to order). ENTERTAINMENT Bit of a mixed bag tbh but not really my thing on holiday anyway. However, if the Silent Disco is on when you're they're I highly recommend it, it was so much fun! Everyone from 10 years old to 85 years old was getting involved and even if you just want to sit in your chair and have a dance or just people watch, it's definitely worth it. The white party was on while we were there and was also fun, you can see the amount of effort the hotel puts on for it. It can look super busy at first as the neighbouring hotels get invited but a good tip is to head over to the far side of the bar where the sports bar is as it's a lot easier/quicker to get a drink! POOLS/BEACH Out of the 4 pools we only used the larger pool and the pool with the swim up bar. Atmosphere at the larger pool was obviously a bit more sedate than at the swim up bar but if that's what you're after it's great! Pretty easy to get a sunbed and staff regularly come round to take your drink orders so you're well looked after. Swim up bar pool was obviously a bit livelier so not for everyone but we loved it. Could've happily spent all day drinking lime daquiri's on the sunbeds in the pool. Bit of advice, don't have food in your bags and try to keep them covered up when away from your sunbeds as the local wildlife has no problem running off with your stuff. Entertaining to watch when it's not happening to you though! You can get a golf cart from the hotel to the beach but it's honestly not worth it as it's only a short walk straight across the road from the hotel entrance and lovely and shaded too. Sea was a bit rough when we went so didn't spend a lot of time there but used the opportunity to explore the facilities of the nearby Riu Yucatan - pool area was a lot smaller (swim up bar pool was about half the size of ours and was near impossible to get a sunbed - much easier getting a sunbed on the beach though). And if you can I thoroughly recommend venturing into Playa Del Carmen, it's about a 35min walk but with the heat we had, we chose to get a taxi instead - can get them easily outside the hotel for 150/200 pesos depending how far into town you want to get dropped off. You get the usual abroad experience of people trying to get you into their shops but they're perfectly pleasant about it if you say no/ignore them (don't fall for the 'I work at your hotel!' line - they can tell where you're staying by your all-inclusive bracelets). Found some lovely little bars off the main strip - we loved Chela de Playa (anything on the same street looked good) and Muza Surf Bar. All in all had a fantastic holiday and would defintely recommend the Riu Tequila!
