The first impression of the Hotel was beyond awesome, but after staying for a couple of days I was rather disappointed.

Firstly, I have to admit that the whole concept of the hotel is genuinely fascinating. Animation team members are professionals, the way they work with visitors, creating friendly atmosphere is fabulous. The view, nature, ocean, beach—that was lovely, for sure, but service? Poor thing. Cutlery, glasses, tea pots, tables, cups—everything was dirty. Extremely. To the point where I found myself thinking better of drinking something and refusing shortly after receiving my order. Oh, and all of my family members as well as friends and colleagues got sick in one way or another (sickness, stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea, if you know what I mean) so we were supposed to skip a few days of sunbathing on the shore and stay in. Of course, it might have happened because of us being not accustomed to being this far from home, or something, but I believe that was due to the same service and high antisanitary conditions we were in. Moreover, I was “lucky” enough to found myself in plenty of situations where waiters, bartenders or maids refused to change my towel for a fresh one or get me a drink and the other stuff unless I pay them. I am aware of the state of economics in Mexico, people not getting proper jobs or getting them but without good salaries. But making me pay more for the things I already have paid? None of my concern, is it? With no disrespect, you wanted the real review—I got you one. Life is not always just about happy images and fairytales. Kind regards, Dariia Elouise St.

Riu chain /Yucatan/ for the first time.... and not the last!

Wow... it was efficiency and availability of services /bars, entertainment/ that "wowed" me. It was our first time at Riu therefore whatever I'm liking here, might be old news for some folks reading this, lol. Riu Yucatan is a medium sized resort. We visited the second week of December. It was full at that time, but personnel worked so efficiently, that virtually no lines were present, either at the buffet, bars, etc. The resort is located in Playacar area of Playa del Carmen; beach was lovely, wide and chairs located under medium sized palm trees; no umbrellas on the beach, those were available around pool area. I liked the colors of our room. It appeared elegant and cozy at the same time. The bathroom arrangement could be more private, but for couples it shouldn't be a problem. The liquor dispenser near the bathroom sink was something new for us /is it only Riu that does that?/. I just sampled tequila and vodka and both were "legitimate" for me, lol. Our mini fridge was packed to the brim with water, soft drinks, beers. Lively and engaging animacion team /Gustavo always put on a show :D/; nice shows at night; White Riu Party on Friday that we were there.... At the buffet - no line ups for freshly fried eggs/omelettes... they were being made fresh all the time by the cooks behind the counter and then distributed on larger plates for the guests to take their pick and enjoy. Now.... no reservations for a la cartes needed... Very efficient system: you just show up whatever time you want /after opening/ and they will seat you or give you a pager to alert you when a table becomes available. That was at a steakhouse a la carte mostly, which was very good but very noisy and located in the lunch buffet area near the pool. Therefore, missing on ambiance. Same with Mexican, I believe - we didn't visit this one. Asian restaurant /it's not Japanese style/, was just nice, quiet sitting with a chinese/asian buffet style food, which was good anyway. We didn't visit the Italia one, but looked nice - elegant, quiet room, located by the entrance to the main buffet. We also walked thru Riu Tequila /across the road/ and Riu Playacar, which we were allowed to visit and have drinks and lunch. I would pick Riu Yucatan over those two, especially since Riu Tequila doesn't have direct access to the beach; there is a longish walkway by Riu Palace to get to the beach from this one. For guests that like to see animals around, there was a lot of agoutis, coatis, two racoons /that we saw/, one healthy squirrel, and a few not so healthy looking howler monkeys in the green area with a "suspension" walkway/bridge. Also a ?spider monkey mommy with a baby attached to her. Cute, looking quite healthy, with long limbs, lol. Also, about taxis: 200 mxp from the resort to @ Quinta Alegria Mall, near Av. Constituyentes. But if you walk out from the resort and catch a cab on the street, you can have it for 150 mxp. Always agree on the price before getting into the cab. The price might change anytime, but our daughter was going to her diving center for 4 days in the row, and she was able to get the same price back and forth. Now, next year, we would like to visit the competitor next door: Iberostar Yucan/Quetzal. Looks like they have more greenery/"jungle" near pool area. But they don't have palm trees on the beach / :( / just the umbrellas /which might be better protection from the sun anyway, lol/. For now....this Riu seems like a tough one to beat.... among the resorts that we visited in the past /two in Playacar area/, it seems to hold a special spot, and definitely we will recommend it to our friends.

    Thanks for an excellent holiday

Due to our appalling experience at our hotel in Cozume which is managed by another Spanish-owned chain of hotels, we booked the Rui Yucatan as our dive centre was in the hotel next door. We were a bit apprehensive before arriving but were pleasantly surprised by the professionalism of the Check-in staff. Special thanks to Chris and Danny. As we requested a room as close as possible to the beach we had to wait a little but were allowed to use the facilities including the bars and restaurants. We are given a large modern room with loads of storage, really comfortable beds and room spotlessly clean. Large free safe and fridge filled with all-inclusive drinks. There were even four optics of various spirits to drink. Spent our days diving away or on the beach which was cleaned regularly. The hotel staff did a great job keeping the whole area clean. All the staff we met were very professional and seemed to enjoy their jobs. The food in the buffet restaurant was well cooked and presented and there was a massive choice each morning and evening. We ate in the Italian and Asian restaurants. The Asian was great although it was a buffet. The Italian was my favourite. The drinks at the bars were very good with well-made cocktails and named brands spirits available at no extra charge. Overall we had a great holiday in Mexico. Thank you Riu Yucatan. Thanks to all the hard-working staff who never stop ensuring the guests are happy from the cleaners to animation to the bar and restaurant staff. Would I return, YES for sure. I would certainly recommend this hotel and its sister hotels Tequila and Playacar whose facilities you can use.

    My Happy Place

We first stayed at Riu Yucatan 23years ago and got married there! Since then it has changed with modernisation (though I loved the carriage in the foyer) and has never disappointed. This was our 5th stay and we are now considering making a yearly trip to stay there. The place is beautiful!
