Time for some major upgrades.
I will begin with an accolade to Paulina at the customer service desk. She tries very hard to listen to your problem and accomodate the request. This is our 5th time at the Riu Emerald Bay over the years. Unfortunately, the resort has gone downhill tremendously. The lobby is very nice to give a good impression but, it goes downhill from there. As Riu members, free upgrades are offered if available. NOT TRUE. We were given the fourth floor even tho I had written and requested a higher room. The hotel was only at 50% capacity and slowest I have ever seen it. They gave us a 7th floor but took Riu points for it. (Riu membership is a joke, don't bother!) We have been faithful Riu members in many other locations as well. The experience goes downhill from there. Rusty brown water flowed through the pipes. (they said it was maintenance) but for 3 days! UGH The shower and shower head were full of BLACK MOLD. I called for my husband to bring a cup of vodka so I could clean it and finish my shower. A new shower head and curtain were brought in after I complained. The room had a moldy, uriney smell to it. The floors were mopped with a very old stinky mop and several very long black hairs appeared on our floor daily. The wifi was out repeatedly and long lineups at the front desk to get back on. The beach side bar, which is of course very busy was covered in spilled drinks and sticky and surrounded with bees. The bartenders are very busy, but a minute to clean goes a long way. Pepes grill (the burgers and fries were good) was also a mess, condiments, dropped food all over the ground and counter tops. Plastic beer cups in the sports bar for hot coffee ! How absolutely gross. These types of things do happen, however, it should be fixed before the customer arrives and all rooms should be ready for habitation. It should not be the customer wasting their vacation trying to get them repaired. Time for a refurbish of the main building on bedding, curtains, furniture which are all old and outdated. We love Mazatlan, the people are wonderful. Time for management to get on this I am sure the response will be the typical ....we strive for excellence etc. and we hope to welcome you back soon..... do the work, get the place up to 2024 standards without the mundane excuses. As I stated at the beginning, I have been to this Riu 5 times, this is an objective review.

Beautiful property, don't expect peace and quiet
This is another beautiful Riu property right on the beach. With 7 pools, a water slide, several restaurants and direct access to the beach, it's got everything you would expect for a Mexican resort vacation. What we didn't expect were the multiple bands playing on the public beach right in front of the hotel. All at the same time. All afternoon and into the evening. It was cacophonous and, frankly, pretty grating. We paid for a junior suite with ocean view, not realizing it would be in direct shot of all this noise pollution. But the mornings were glorious, hearing the roar of the ocean as we woke up. The food was delightful, and the service outstanding. We just wish the sunsets could have been similarly quiet and peaceful.

warm and sunny
everything about our stay was excellent.we have stayed at riu several times and they are always very good .the only complaint we had was the 3 or 4 marachi bands all playing at the same time ..all facing the resort .all amplified to the point where we found it hard to sit out on the balcony while they were playing
