Riu Negril worth it? Ya mon!
This, our first Riu experience, did not disappoint. Negril is a solid 2 hours from Montego Bay, so be prepared for the extra shuttle commute. But once you arrive, you are in a lovely space and very good hands. From our first greeting at the reception by the very kind Monique, to our departure, where we said goodbye to that same Monique, we had a great time. Highlights include the beach, the food selection and the overall general vibe. The resort rooms are very clean (shout out to Kaylene!) and with shockingly comfortable beds. We were fortunate enough to have a room with a view. The balcony was small (and this seemed consistent for most rooms), but it does have a small clothing rack with two comfortable chairs and a table. We really liked the quiet pool - beware of the bug bites you will likely get if you are along the back of the pool area by the greenery for too long (though it is worth noting that we did see some remediation efforts going on to help combat the issue). The beach area near the beach bar was lovely. We have read many people saying there was a lot of seaweed. A lot seems like a bit of an exaggeration. Essentially none gets left on the beach owing to pretty calm waters (at least for the time we were there) and some early morning raking, we assume. There were patches on the ocean floor, along the very generous beachfront area, but you can lift your feet and get over it unless you are going deep into the squared off swim area where it is harder to avoid. This is the ocean after all. The water is warm and inviting. If you want to go out onto the water, all guests have free access to paddleboards, kayaks or paddle boats, just head over to the water sports hut and they will help you out. Worth mentioning too were the bounty of lounger chairs on the beach. Never needed to fight or pray for a nice spot along the beach – there were plenty of chairs to choose from. Note that there are no umbrellas along the beach, but plenty of healthy palm trees to find shady spots when needed. The buffets were very good. For breakfast you can also grab a fancy coffee from the sports bar. We recommend the iced coffee. The lunch buffet area is smaller than the dinner area (tho primarily outdoor seating which is nice), but you can also eat at the grill/taco place near the pool. We only managed to book one specialty restaurant for dinner (the Kulinarium) via the RIU app. It was fine, but honestly the buffet had more variety. Another night, we tried the Mandalay Asian cuisine restaurant, which seemed a la carte on the app, but was buffet the night we were there at least (and walk in). And again, as far as quality goes, it was okay but nothing to write home about. As for drinks, no surprise, while the fine folks at the pool or at Bob’s on the beach do an outstanding job slinging the (light on the booze) mixes with aplomb (and have a much tougher job), the lobby bar is where you went for quality over quantity. We would ask Ruen for a dealer’s choice every time, and every time he would not disappoint. Each night the resort had a planned event - the highlight being the white party. Their programming is tight and their entertainment staff is working hard all day, all night. Also: they aren't too annoyingly aggressive, which was exactly what was needed. Shout out to Abegail who brought the energetic recruitment vibe every single day (even if it failed on us! LOL!). Overall: amazing experience and puts Riu high on our list for another visit. Note for those who are using Sunwing: we had a chaotic experience getting to paradise, much of which we can disregard as snow in the winter is normal for Canadians. However, if you are looking for someone who cares about your experience, don't expect this from Aneisha - who represents Sunwing though Nexus at the resort. Perhaps she has been hardened by the many guests with weather-related delays, but her treatment of guests is seriously lacking in the kindness scale. She embodies the "don't care" attitude - not ideal in the customer service space. We experienced this ourselves, and watched it happen with multiple different Sunwing guests. So, as long as you plan to not need a bit of help on that end, you'll be fine.

Great Getaway and stay at RIU Negril
Great staff, accommodations, atmosphere and more. It's hard to walk away from RIU Negril and not make a friend - whether it's a traveler from the other side of the world or one of the amazing workers at RIU Negril. Two of us traveled as a very quick last minute getaway so we had no idea what to expect. This resort is fantastic if you want to travel as a couple, a family or solo. As of February 2025, it appears RIU Negril was recently renovated and it shows. A very clean venue and easy to navigate. From the front desk to the cleaning crew and in between, there was always a positive, friendly energy waiting for you every minute of every day. Restaurants were good and the RIU App very helpful to make reservations or see what daily events were happening. If you're looking for quiet, there are areas of the resort to hang out. You want the party? No problem. Very happy we chose RIU Negril for so many reason.
