Honest Review - Excellent Experience With A Few Flaws

We are currently here nearing the end of our 2 week stay. I must say, we were really worried having read so many negative reviews, which is what prompted me to write this review. Right from check-in, we were pleasantly surprised. Most staff here are very friendly and try their best to make their guests happy. Remember that you reap what you sow and if you're nice, they'll be nice The Good: Staff and service is great the majority of the time. Front desk staff is very good. Security is everywhere and you feel safe. Beach is lovely. Pool is nice but we never use it. All rooms are ocean/beachfront Food is tasty and good (no idea what more anyone expects),. you'll always find something you like. The Chefs work hard! Lobby bar staff is excellent and quick to serve. Housekeepers do a great job making up our room, leaving towels and water. No complaints. The groundskeepers are always hard at work keeping the property neat and tidy, as are the janitorial staff. We've been fortunate to have had a respectful, mature crowd here during our stay (for the most part). The Not As Great: Rooms need a refresh, a little tired and not enough storage. Shower leaks at the glass enclosure seals and door so we had to put a towel there to prevent floods. Onlv one bedside lamp. AC works but not effectively enough. None of the above spoiled our time here though. The pool bar blasted deafening music all day the first few days so that no one could hear a thing, even after asking to reduce the decibel level a bit. The last few days there have been some noise breaks, thankfully. Generally: There's one buffet, beach shack restaurant and Mediterranean a la carte here, and one buffet and Jamaican a la carte at the sister property Decameron Montego next door so both property guests can use all facilities. A la carte restaurants require reservations the morning of and they're not open every day. Honourable mentions to : Tevin (Front Desk); Nikola, Rockell, Tevin, and Jay are amazing at the buffet restaurant; Roxanne, Restaurant Supervisor, really knows her job. What an asset she is! Jay and Junior - excellent (lobby bar). Carl Lewis at the watersports area took us on a great snorkeling tour and hobie cat sail the next day. Highly recommend. Warning: If you leave the gates to walk into town you'll be bombarded by local trinket store operators. Also, chances are you'll be followed into town by a shady local offering to give you a tour who won't accept multiple "no's"which is a bit unsettling. If you want to buy liquor, coffee etc. go to the Mega Supermarket in town where the prices aren't inflated. Avoid the "tour bus" traps. There are all kinds of reputable taxi services just outside the lobby and security will help get you one if there isn't. Be sure to negotiate the cost before you get in. We hired Nick, certified tour guide, who took us on a private 2 hour tour of the area. Nick is good, knowledgeable and trustworthy. Many of the staff here know him. Generally speaking, the staff here really want to please their guests. Sure there are some who don't hit the mark but you'll get that at home too! Great Beach, good snorkelling

This hotel has room for improvement. It could be a 4 star, but with all the housekeeping and check in issues, I would rate it 2 stars. The beach is clean and the water warm and clear. They could use to add more beach chairs. The water sports center is short staffed, so the catamaran can only go out when a few of the staff with sailing knowledge are available. They take you for a ride, you will likely not be the one sailing. If you can sail, and love it, you will want to go somewhere that they allow you to do it. The a la carte restaurants are by reservation only, and both are not open every night. The seating capacity seems to be about half full at any time. Our check in was not at 3pm as stated on the website and Air Canada Vacations site. It was nearly 5pm. A long wait after a long travel day. Housekeeping: they seem to be very short staffed and you will be without towels, sheets, blankets most days. You can call the front desk and later at some point you will get service. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. You will not get water in your room every day, and they do not serve bottled water in the restaurants. A four star resort would always be serving bottled water in the restaurants. Head across the road to the variety store for bottled water. It is about $2 a bottle. Wine on the resort is limited to one type of white, one type of red, and beer to one kind. No selection at all. The food served in the buffets has variety and is usually well stocked. The coffee shop serves coffee and tea and very limited snacks at some times. Would suggest that this space be used for a full service snack bar, open longer hours and with a variety of snacks. The beach restaurant (Olivia), serves limited selection of snack food, with limited hours. Take the miss polly boat out snorkelling, lots of fish to see. Clear water and nice deep reef. Snorkel off the beach in front of the Montego beach resort. I have been to this resort twice, and the Montego Beach resort once. If you get it on a great deal price wise, you will get just what you pay for, otherwise, pay a bit more and go to a true 4 star resort.

    Fun in Jamaica

Good food, lot of activities, friendly service. Great view from the 5th floor balcony. Some of the bar tenders were excellent and made you feel really welcome. Shows were quite nice and if you like dancing this is the place to go. Pools were good also.

Don't believe all the reviews, the Montego Bay DeCameron, CORNWALL BEACH side, awesome!

This was our first time to Jamacia, albeit we are frequent travelers. We chose the DeCameron, CORNWALL BEACH side as it was advertised as a "boutique hotel" which suited us. It was as advertised. We totally enjoyed ourselves and were NOT disappointed in our accomadations, amenities, the grounds, the staff, or the bar / food service "overall." This hotel is literally minutes from the Sangster airport; one watches planes coming all day from the hotel / beach. Upon our arrival, the smiling faces were welcomed as well as the offer of a cool refreshment. The rooms were available within an accepted time limit. We had the "bracelet" on so we were able to enjoy snack bar or bars. (As mentioned, we are seasoned travelers, so we had a change of clothes / sandles in our carry-on.) The spacious clean room did not disappoint. All the amenities, excellent shower, huge towels etc. King bed was very comfortable and the AC worked extremely well. This was a relief after reading some reviews. NEVER an issue with hot water, flushing toilets or leaking showers!! The view from the room / deck was beautiful and we watched sunsets and the rising moon every night. Awesome. This hotel DOES have 2 functioning elevators. Although we were on the 5th floor, we rarely used them as it was great exercise taking the stairs and we are in our 70's! The food- Mediterranean a la carte has the best chicken risotto and beef tenderloin. 😋 Never left room for desserts but we did enjoy the wine served. We did not eat at the Sister hotel a la carte. (Note- to make reservations for either of these a la cartes, you must be at either lobby front desk before 9am and wait to book for that day (9am) at the respective hotel.) Our Anniversary dinner was so very special at the Mediterranean with thanks to Brittany, Roxanne, Maurice and Chantel along with the great chefs! The bottle of bubbly was a wonderful surprise. Buffet- it was the usual mayhem at times with the staff doing their best to keep up with the demands. It was all in the timing, so we figured out the down times and those times made for enjoyable meals. Food was varied and had great flavors. We ate more jerk chicken and pork than was necessary! Breakfasts were great, never a complaint except when busy, there was a wait for your coffee or juice. You could self serve but if cups / glasses were not available, you, like the staff, were out of luck. Again, determine the best time to go and this isn't an issue. Bars- the staff did their best, especially when a throng of people appeared at once. Again, we seemed to luck out as we always got excellent service and NO, it wasn't because we thrust out dollar bills, it was just the crew. Courtney, Dale and so many many more great people gave excellent service and were awesome to talk to! The Jamacia Delight was a delight, especially, Courtney's! 😉 Cafe Bar at second level- good coffee but only opens at 8am. Noting the line up for coffee at the buffet before it opens, maybe this coffee bar should open earlier?? The buffet staff are working hard to get it ready for breakfast and then there are us, demanding self serve coffee be readily available, cups, milk. Etc. Snack bar- we only went once but it appears it is hit or miss, depending on what is being offered. The Nexus reps are great people who are fun to talk to as well. We booked the only tour we went to Jamacia to do. That was the Nine Mile Tour, Bob Marley's childhood home and where he now rests in his mausoleum. This was, as expected, a long drive up the winding steep mountain but our driver, "Cpt. Kirk" did an awesome job. We did the tour, stopped for lunch and was back by 3:30. Well worth it, being Marley fans. Speaking of Marley, the animation crew did an excellent job at the hotel on Feb 6, which, if he were alive, would have been his 80th birthday. Animation crew- did their best to entertain the crowd. However, the main nightly show (9:30) was presented at the sister hotel. This again, a plus for us as we seldom go to nightly shows, hence it makes the Decameron Cornwall Beach side, quiet at night. Albeit, Saturday night, beach bar b q happens and Jamacian vibes are everywhere! Smoking- reviews are varied on this. As a non smoking, it was of course noticeable to me but the only time we can honestly say it bothered us was on our private balcony!! The "neighbors" would light up, coupled with their spasms of coughing, it didn't make a pleasant start to our day. Otherwise, to each their own! We are glad we ignored the reviews, happy that Adrian was our first contact at the Decameron Cornwall Beach and so very glad we got to meet really nice people, staff, and other guests! Thank you. BTW, we were on the Sunwing flight that got diverted to Philadelphia due to a medical emergency. Getting to Jamacia via Sunwing was fantastic. Leaving Jamaica after our stint in Club Mobay was fantastic, again via Sunwing. However, trying to get out of the US was a trial of patience! Once Sunwing landed, we were under US authority. Those who were there, know our discomfort so no need to elaborate. Sunwing pilot had no alternative but to land if what he knew was deemed as an emergency. If not for that emergency, we would have arrived home within a 25 minute delay only. Never have we been disappointed with Sunwing prior to this and possibly, better communication would have alleviated alot of stress.

    Grand Decameron...

The staff was super friendly and helpful. We could use the amenities from both Cornwall and Montego Bay hotels, which was awesome. Plus, the hotel is just a short drive from the Montego Bay airport. The restaurant service and entertainment were great. On the downside, the facilities could use some improvements.
