Not a 5 star hotel!
Rooms were clean. Tried to upsell you on everything. Bartenders on Xmas were more focused on playing dice versus serving drinks. Food at the specialty restaurants was not good and the service was also below average. Entertainment was average. Royalton reservation app was horrible.

STINKS!
We are on a family trip and have two rooms in Building 6: one on the first floor with a swim-out and the other on the fourth floor with a rooftop patio. The toxic smell in our Diamond Club rooms is so unbearable that we can't sleep, can't eat, and can't even feel clean. The stench of sewage is overpowering and awful—it's something that Royalton/Marriott should be truly embarrassed about, especially considering we pay extra for Diamond Club. The drains in the sinks and showers emit a gassy odor, and even the water smells unpleasant. It's impossible to feel clean when bathing and washing in such a stench. You know there’s a plumbing issue when numerous drain flies are flying around the room. On top of the horrific smell, the rooms are weathered and falling apart. Royalton should not be charging top dollar and should not be claiming to be a 5-star hotel at this resort. That is a total FRAUD! The smell isn't confined to our rooms; every now and then, we catch a whiff of sewage throughout the resort. The seating area on the far right of the buffet restaurant, near the bathrooms, smells offensive. It ruins the entire dining experience. On the plus side, it's a surefire way to avoid overeating at the buffet. We will not blame the staff or the hardworking people at the resort. It is not their fault. The blame lies with the company, the hotel chain. Shame on you, Royalton/Marriott. Shame on you.

This resort is ran by SCAMMERS!!
This resort is ran by SCAMMERS! After staying in the Diamond Club Chairman suite (the most expensive room on the property) with my family for 7 days, I learn at checkout that my $600 room credit was really just coupons for random things at the resort. I was not told this at check in or when I referenced the credit when applying it to charges at the Spa and at restaurants. Instead it is sprung on me when I’m trying to leave the resort to catch my flight home! Yanuen , the Diamond Club agent was patronizing and disrespectful and Enrique went upstairs to talk to the manager about the situation and then came back and said he was the MANAGER and there was nothing that could be done. I even said so he went upstairs and had a conversation with himself in which Yanuen replied yup, that’s what he did. These idiots are willing to lose thousands of dollars over $600?!?! Clearly I have the money but to literally be lied to my face and then held hostage is why NO ONE SHOULD EVER GO TO THIS RESORT!! The infamous bait and switch ruined what could have been future trips but NEVER AGAIN! Ironically as I was leaving another couple was complaining about being charged $1000 erroneously for an excursion! I would love for someone from Royalton Riviera to contact me about this situation and I will gladly provide more details about the unprofessionalism of Yanuen and Enrique!!

Not a 5 star hotel!!!
Hard to get into any of the restaurants. The drink seems to be watered down. They don't refill your nespresso capuels unless you ask them too so coffe takes a while in the morning unless you go to the coffee shop which takes about the same time and they only give you 2 capsules per day. Room smelt like drainage but you can not keep the air conditioning on so every time you come in you get that wonderful smell. I am a Marriott Ambassador elite member and I am surprised this is an Autograph Collection property. No recognition of my status and the attitude of some of the guess services staff is horrible. Don't work in customer service if you don't like dealing with people you never know you have in front of you. The restaurants are not great but I will say the buffet restaurant is very good a clean. Likewise the rooms are clean but not well maintained. Dirty cushions on the bed with stains on them. Coffee machine, steamer, closet motion sensor and living room light all broken. If your not well travelled then this might be OK but for what you pay I expect a lot more.

I wouldn’t pay to come back.
First off, the Kids Club personnel (Vale, Ale, Juana, Beto, Carolina, Kari, Pao, and Vero) were amazing with our children and they had awesome activities setup for them to participate in! Now, let’s talk about everything else. This is not a 5-star resort. I would give it a 4-star resort rating. The smell unfortunately sucks and there is nothing they can do about it. The hotel is built on top of a swamp so the sewagey smell is unavoidable. The water is not drinkable which is why bottled water is placed all over the hotel room not just inside the fridges. Their water has an odor. Again, not much they can do about it. Nonetheless, no matter how much we can understand why the smells and odors exist, it is still annoying and makes the overall experience a little worse. Why they built this resort in this location in Mexico is a wonder. Guest services is subpar. They couldn’t help me with any of my issues. I won’t go into detail about what issues they couldn’t help with, but it just seems like they could have done more to resolve them. They talk a big game…”call us if you need anything,” but when I did there was no sense of urgency and most times I had to constantly follow-up to get updates. This staff works for the quantity of guests versus the quality towards them. Diamond club isn’t worth it. Our butlers, if that’s what you want to call them…I hardly saw them. Everything was done over WhatsApp. Which can be convenient at times, but not very hospitable. We had two assigned and one I never even met face to face. She made no effort to either. Their nanny services were unavailable to us. No matter how far in advance I would request it…they never had any openings. So, my wife and I got no time by ourselves to do adult activities while we were there. If they are going to offer the service they should be able to commit at least one service over a week’s stay, in my opinion. Rooms are DATED! Do not believe the ads stating “contemporary and modern resort.” That’s not true. The room furniture is worn, stained, and old. The TV’s cable/guide system is even dated. We had two TV’s and one missing remote that we tried to get taken care of and never did. So, we had to move one remote between two rooms. There are not enough outlets! There is one in each bathroom, one on both sides of the master bed and then the outlets behind the TV’s mounted on the wall. That’s it. So, bring outlet strips with you so you have enough outlets for your electronics. Towels are dated and rough. Beds and pillows were all right. The showers had great water pressure, but they leaked water onto the floor no matter what we tried to do. I can’t stand stepping into a cold puddle or wet floor towel after a hot shower. Makes me want to take another shower. Room fan only worked on two settings…off or high speed. So, it was either bake in bed or freeze your butt off. Housekeeping throughout the public areas was pretty bad. Dirty tables/chairs, empty glasses, plates of food left all over. It drew cats, raccoons, and seagulls. Attention to detail just isn’t there in all aspects. The $600 hotel credits we were given was a joke. We only ended up using about $150. Cuz it works on discounted services versus cash to spend. So, basically you have to spend more on services in order to use up all the credit given to you. They should just give you the credit and let you spend it however you want, like cash. The onsite stores are horrendously overpriced. I mean $14 for a small bag of gummy bears, $80 for one package of Dramamine (24 caplets). I’ve heard of resort pricing, but I mean come on. That’s just wrong. The food is edible…that’s about it. We tried the daily buffet at La Marche and dinners at Taj, Hunters, Caribbean, Grazie, and Zen. The food was just not great. No matter if you dine all inclusive or pay extra for some special meal. The only really tasty food was the burger and fries sold out of the Chef to Go trucks poolside. The spa and excursions were over priced as usual. Nothing new there. The excursion to Isla Mujeres was just a crap show. Too crowded and nowhere to sit on the boat and the beach. The golf carts were fun (extra $55 USD of course…but fun). The dolphin swim excursion is not worth it in my opinion, but I guess it’s just one of those things you do for your kids. The photo packages offered at the end were astronomical in price. I never knew Cancun to be such an overpriced experience for tourists. Not to end on a bad note…the kids activities were excellent, the ice cream sold in the coffee shop was really tasty, and the weather was beautiful. Our housekeeper did a nice job keeping us stocked with towels and soap and the room picked up and organized for us. The majority of the staff are very polite and they try to be helpful despite the language barrier. The layout of the resort is very nice…it’s just so dated! They need a makeover and they would be a very descent 5-star resort no problem. Hmmm…i don’t know though…the smell and odors are not good. Lol. Would we come back? That’s a no for us, but for others this might be a great getaway. I know it’s hard to take other people’s words because everyone considers things differently. If you look at other reviews, you will see we are not the only ones making these observations. So, I can say from experience, you can trust these reviews. So, think strongly before you commit to a very expensive stay at Royalton Riviera Cancun.
