Beautiful but overcrowded resort. Inconsistent service, good food, spa access and kid’s club only for a fee.
We spent a week at The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama – here is our detailed experience for our second stay: 🛬 Arrival & Check-in: ✔️ Car was taken upon arrival, luggage unloaded and brought to the room ✔️ Welcomed by the same friendly staff member who assisted us in 2017 ✔️ Fast, competent, and friendly check-in ✔️ Excellent upgrade from a Deluxe Resort View Room to a Citadel Ocean View Suite 🏨 Room: ✔️ Minimalist yet stylish decor ✖️ Doors slightly worn, connecting door to the living room stuck ✖️ Inconsistent water temperature – fluctuating from too cold to boiling hot 🧹 Housekeeping: ✔️ Cleanliness was acceptable ✔️ A nice handwritten card every few days as a thoughtful touch ✖️ Body lotion provided only upon request – unusual for Ritz-Carlton standards ✖️ No special details like towel animals, overall quite basic ✖️ Staff seemed overworked 👧 Kid’s Club: ✔️ Beautifully designed, very friendly staff ✔️ Our daughter loved it and wanted to go every day ✖️ 24-hour advance booking requirement was inconvenient – no room for spontaneity ✖️ A fee of €27 per morning/afternoon session felt inappropriate for a resort of this level – should be complimentary 🍽️ Restaurants: Note: All restaurants were operating at maximum capacity, resulting in inconsistent service and food quality. 🍳 La Veranda (Breakfast) ✔️ Great selection and quality ✔️ Berries available only upon request – no proactive offer ✔️ Magda was an absolute gem – and the rest of the staff was friendly and attentive ✖️ Very crowded, often three people seated at two-person tables – noisy and chaotic atmosphere ✖️ Long wait times for a table – unpredictable, sometimes already full at 8:45 AM, other times not until 9:30 AM ✖️ Extending breakfast hours beyond 10:30 AM could help alleviate congestion 🥩 Txoko (Visited twice) ✔️ Starters were excellent, especially the stuffed peppers ✖️ Main courses (steak, Iberian pork) were inconsistent → received a small credit ✖️ Wanted a break between courses, but it wasn’t possible – also resulted in a small credit ✖️ Extremely crowded, long wait for a table 🍕 Verona (Visited twice) ✔️ All dishes (fish, pasta, pizza) were very good ✖️ Long wait times for a table ✖️ Ordered wine but it was forgotten – oh well, good for our health 😉 ✖️ Kids’ meal should have been served with both starter and main course together – didn’t work during our second visit 🐟 Mirador (Visited twice) ✖️ 1st visit was disappointing: • Calamari completely unseasoned • Salt-crusted sea bass was full of bones ✔️ 2nd visit was excellent – the only dinner that truly met Ritz-Carlton standards 💆 Wellness: ✖️ Spa area only accessible for a fee or with a booked treatment – unworthy of a hotel in this category ✔️ Facial treatment was easy to book and very good ✔️ A complimentary spa pass was provided with treatment booking ✖️ Booking additional massages was difficult – extremely limited availability online ✖️ When inquiring at the spa reception, we were initially offered two available slots that suddenly became unavailable – ended up only getting a facial treatment 💶 Price-Performance Ratio: ✔️ We had a good deal for the Deluxe Citadel Resort View Room at around €220 per night incl. of breakfast ✖️ The regular price of approximately €430 per night incl. of breakfast would not have been worth it for us 📌 Conclusion: ✖️ Hotel and the entire island were overcrowded – a stark contrast to 2017 ✖️ Restaurants fully booked, no flexibility for last-minute changes ✖️ Lack of consistency in service ✖️ Staff working at their limits, leaving little time for guests – the special Ritz-Carlton flair suffered ✔️ Still, it was a relaxing vacation ✔️ Recommended if you find a good deal and can accept the limitations ✖️ However, if you expect the level of The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, Singapore or Dubai, you may be disappointed

Avoid disappointment
As an avid golfer I have.visited this resort for the last nine years Never again the golf course has been butchered to satisfy the needs of properly development The hotel still has great quality amenities but is completely let down by service We were there for four nights and had to que every morning for breakfast for up to 20 minutes completely unacceptable at the price of this hotel We were unable to book any of the hotel restaurants though they all seemed to be half empty Power cut in our room left us with no power lights or aircon or telephone in our room for four hours one night I raised these issues with reception and all were recognised and agreed but no resolution offered

Absolutely wonderful stay at RC, Abama
We had a really wonderful stay at Ritz Carlton Abama. Everything was just perfect. The hotel itself is absolutely stunning. I feared it might feel too big and intimidating but it didn't at all. All of the facilities were first class and they were a large number of fantastic restaurants to choose from. We enjoyed delicious meals at Verona and El Mirador. The shuttle down to the beach is super fun and we also enjoyed some fantastic fitness classes at the gym. Service was personalised and very efficient. We would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you!

Terrible service
The first evening we arrived we went to El Mirador for dinner where we were served uncooked prawns. Unfortunately I didn’t notice this until I took the head off the second one meaning I’ve had food poising all weekend and not been able to eat or drink anything. This meant I had to cancel our reservation for the next night at the 2 Michelin star restaurant but when I told the reception desk what had happened they told me I would still have to pay a fee. I contested this and they said they would speak to the manager and call me back, they never did so I had to go back again (very sick at this point) and repeat my request. Eventually this was resolved. However, when I asked to see a medic or doctor they told me I would have to pay a fee and the toast and tea they said would be sent to my room, never arrived. On the second day we visited the pool and ordered some drinks, after an hour another waiter came to us to ask if we wanted any drinks and we told him we were still waiting on the ones we ordered an hour ago. On this evening we ordered room service and were asked to call reception when we were ready for our tray to be picked up, we called, they never arrived. I’ve also witnessed staff smoking around the pool even though it’s a non-smoking hotel, saw a chef come to a life guard to patch up a cut on his hand. Our room was cleaned but we were left with no glasses or cups for tea or coffee. When I called to have our room service tray picked up after we were done with it, no one arrived. And the final cherry on the cake… when I went to reception to speak to a manager about all of this, they were “in a meeting and would call me back.” There was no call and it took me contacting Marriott head office to finally get to speak to a manager who did his best to make it up to us however not before telling me staff had been having the same stomach issues. This was supposed to be a once in a lifetime trip to one of the best hotels in the world which my friend and I saved hard for so we could enjoy. I am thoroughly disappointed and can safely say I will not be visiting this hotel again or recommending it to anyone.

Great stay again
Stayed at the Abama many times before. We had a club retreat ocean view room. Room was excellent with a rap around balcony a very comfortable room. We did not experience any issues that a few guests have written about. The staff were polite and friendly and very accommodating to our needs. The club retreat area was excellent and recently constructed, offering nibbles all day and drinks around an infinity pool. We found the restaurants excellent some a bit overpriced, but in general very good. The only thing we miss were the golf carts, that were supplied for the Club area, in the past, although all you have to do is request a pick and someone will come and collect you. Special thanks to Carla and her team that made our stay special again in the Club Retreat We to have travelled the world as many of your guests and have found some of the complaints most surprising. We are already making arrangements to return in the spring.
