City View
I do not like cities but visited Honolulu with my wife so she could visit the Arizona Memorial in honor of her father's service in WW II. The Waikiki Marina Resort (which is how signage designates the resort) shares space with many other tenants at the Ilikai building. Our room was modern, clean, comfortable, and more spacious than I anticipated. It had a full-sized stove and full-sized refrigerator and seating for two at the bar. I would have loved an ocean view but was assigned to a "city view," which is an example of the lack of value in my "VIP Ownership" with Club Wyndham. A bank of elevators serves the 25-or-so floors, which typically means a wait of a minute or two when coming and going, which is not bad for a building of this size. Our room was reasonably quiet, although we could still hear street noise from the 21st floor. The window glass is in desperate need of cleaning, although the view is not lovely. As often happens with Wyndham properties, there was some pressure to attend an "owner update," which we decided to do because we had recently received a call from "corporate" about a "flag" on our account. As we suspected, the only "flag" on our account was that we had not made a purchase at the last owner update. This is typical of Wyndham's deceitful communication, which too often detracts from the vacation experience for which we have dearly paid!

More like a motel than resort
Waikiki Marina Resort (at Ilikai) is stuck in the 80s. I appreciate a place that would hold that nostalgia, keep a vintage look perhaps for the sake of Honolulu of yesteryear as opposed to today’s luxury shopping strip but there’s a way to do that and still provide nice accommodations for your guests. This was not it. At least for the Shell Vacations units, it’s poorly maintained. The AC (window unit) is falling apart with fully rusted vents and so loud when it’s running you need closed captions on the TV. Everything is so dated I don’t know how clean it is. The shower is older basic but at least have a shower curtain that isn’t broken. There was remnants of toiletries in the shower wall that’s no longer offered instead you get tiny shampoo bottle that’s enough for a couple days. The ceiling of the bathroom is also something to not look up at. We got a little friend that was an insect like a roach that can fly. The doorway is banged up. The closet is small, which can’t be changed unless remodeled but at least have better doors and a hanger rod that isn’t rusted. The pool is also lacking, it’s like a motel pool. It’s best to skip that all together and quickly walk over to Hilton’s Lagoon and the beach, both easily accessible. The hallways and elevator is warm. The only positive thing I can say is the lobby is nicer than the rest of the place, it’s got a convenient mart, ice cream shop, coffee shop, a good poke place, and some other stores. Location is convenient between Ala Moana mall and International Marketplace and the many shops/restaurants on that side, both walkable.

Lively location with everything around
I like the resort and it's amenities, it was near many restaurant, stores, cafés, beach. Only at late night time the sound of the cars make some problems which doesn't not let people rest well. It is better to have the room on upper floor (more than 12) with ocean view.

Second visit to the iconic Ilikai
The resort has much to offer. It is adjacent to a large marina and within 2 minutes to the sandy beaches of Waikiki. From our balcony we could watch the surfers, the sailboat races, the comings and goings of the tour boats, and the commercial vessels transiting to the port. Every Friday at sunset we could watch Hilton's famous fireworks. Two or three times a week we were treated to Hawaiian bands and Hula dancing, in the courtyard. Conveniently for us we were just a 15 walk from the expanded Ala Moana Mall. The front desk staff, Carolina, Clarissa, and Shawn were professional and welcoming to us. We hope to come back again next year.
